Software Developer (IDEO Client)

In a nutshell:

Lighthouse Labs is a joint innovation lab between IDEO and Mexichem that develops scalable solutions for systemic global challenges — from food and water security to building sustainable infrastructure.

As a Software Developer at Lighthouse Labs, you’ll be a founding member of the Lighthouse and will help develop the experiences that make Mexichem’s new product and service offerings successful in the world.

Why is this role important?

We refer to our Software Developers as Creative Coders. You’re user-centered at your core, and have a passion for building. You’re experienced with using full stack software to craft product, aligning user needs and business objectives. You understand web, device-native, databases, scalability, analytics/metrics, and agile development processes.

You’ll partner closely with our Design Researchers, Interaction Designers, Business Designers, and Directors in each phase of work from insights to building prototypes to building new software-based ventures.

Once here you will:

  • Develop a unique point of view about the ways digital services and technology can address human needs for food, water, shelter, information, and materials
  • Own and build codebases for a wide range of digital products, services, and experiences.
  • Design and implement scalable code on the full application stack: front-end user application, back-end API, and data modeling and querying
  • Collaborate closely with product owner and team to uncover customer needs, prioritize tasks, and launch new features

Relevant experience and mindset:

  • BS / MS in computer science or a related engineering field, or commensurate experience
  • 5+ years experience working with web technologies
  • Fluency and comfort working with Javascript, React and/or Angular
  • Fluency and comfort working with data in Python (SQL design, optimization, implementation and database design are all pluses)
  • Fluency and comfort working with Git
  • You’ll synthesize user needs and bring them to a feature list, design them along with your core team members, and take the lead on implementing them
  • You find that taking a break from coding to go to a brainstorm and then diving back into code makes for the perfect day
  • Contributing to great visual design or improving the UX in a design jam alongside world-class designers sounds refreshing
  • You bring experience and interest in machine learning or AI - TensorFlow, Pandas, NLTK, Google Cloud AI
  • Implementing and extending on automated testing suites sounds fun
