Principal Designer, Software

In a nutshell:

Global design firm IDEO is growing its software design group in Cambridge, MA, and is looking for a senior colleague to lead small, interdisciplinary teams, exploring and applying technologies to create human-centered solutions across a diverse variety of opportunities.

You will:

Lead and deliver great design across industries

  • Lead teams of 3-5 interdisciplinary designers through our human-centered design process, from creating prototypes designed to facilitate conversations with users during research, to evolving our solutions into full-fledged, software products and services
  • Communicate the process of designing and delivering software-based products – identifying how technology, business, and user needs interrelate – with non-technical team members and clients in a way that’s accessible, credible, and inspiring

Serve as a trusted advisor to our clients

  • Collaborate directly with client teams to ensure they are understood and empowered to champion the solutions we develop together.
  • Provide technical stewardship of our solutions working with internal client development teams or identifying and collaborating with development partners

Contribute to IDEO’s global business

  • Contribute to scoping clients’ needs and challenges – identifying, framing, planning, and budgeting our engagements
  • Leverage IDEO’s internationally recognized brand to create partnerships with client organizations, engage in speaker opportunities, or craft new market niches

Some of our work to check out:

  • Redesigning Voting With LA County: A modular voting system that addresses the system’s complexities and can adapt over time.
  • uMotif: Accelerating the growth of British digital health startup.
  • Lot Bot (blog post): We built a bot to assign parking spots. It fought back.

You have:

  • Excellent client communication, team collaboration, and project management skills
  • Diverse, hands-on professional experience, with an interest and proficiency in a variety of technologies, tools, and languages, e.g. C# in Unity VR development, React.js for web frontend, or Python/C++ for embedded IOT type products
  • 1-2 years leading teams building user-centered experiences, products, and services
  • 3-5 years contributing as a core engineer or designer on teams working on user-centered experiences, products, and services
  • A degree in Computer Science or Design (or equivalent experiences) with a high level of expertise in both
  • Experience in building strategic systems, known for nonlinear problem solving and reliably predicting the future. You work with software to construct interdependent, multi-faceted systems, demonstrating a nuanced understanding of information flow, inputs & outputs, choice, behavior, and feedback.

Who gets us excited:

We are particularly interested in candidates that have demonstrated deep fluency in one or more of the following focus areas:

  • Physical/Digital. You’re a creative technologist who works with software and hardware to create connected installations, experiences, and augmented objects. Your skills may include electrical engineering, micro-controllers, sensors, creative coding, or robotics.
  • Emergent Interactions. You’re a pioneering software-meets-interaction designer who works with emergent edge technology to explore new interactions at the frontier of what’s possible. You’ve dabbled, but have focus in a specialization ranging from computer vision, machine learning, augmented/mixed reality, and blockchain.
  • Digital Immersion. You’re an illusion technologist, crafting intangibles like “feeling,” via code. You guide people across the uncanny valley by working with software to create immersive experiences, games, or interactive narratives. You can reach deep into the inner nature of physics and computer graphics, and apply that to 2D/3D or VR, with tools like Unity or the latest front-end technologies.

Application Instructions:

In your cover letter, please point us to 2 of your projects that represent your capabilities, interests, and leadership, as well as links to your website and git repos. Extras like presentations you’ve given or blog posts are also welcome. In particular, we are interested in a collection of work that demonstrates a deep technical expertise in one or more platforms, languages or domains, as well as examples of leadership and teamwork experience.

We will review applications starting in early to mid January and thus may not be in touch immediately.
