Production Designer (Contract)

In a nutshell:

IDEO San Francisco Production team is in search of a Production Designer who will help design and produce assets, artifacts, and tools that support our client deliverables and events, and internal communication materials.

Role Summary:

Production Designers are a key link with project teams when it comes to sourcing and producing materials for client deliverables. The range often spans from print production, for either in-house or sending to vendors, to building prototypes and props and setting up for client meetings and events. Your role, which is not only being hands on, but helping to find the right option for execution and ensuring the quality of output, is just as vital as the design itself. While Production Designers collaborate with most disciplines, our main partnership is with Communication Designers on tangible and print deliverables.

Why is this role important for IDEO's work?

We approach the way we design for our own community with the same amount of care and intention as we do for our clients. Our value of “Talk Less, Do More” gets real in this role, as your ability to translate concepts into prototypes helps the team get tangible quickly and produce work that not only informs but also inspires IDEO across the globe. We count on you to be resourceful, generative, and masterful at juggling and producing for multiple projects.

With collaboration and optimism at the core of what we do, you’ll be expected to work very well within a team - with shifting priorities - thinking both quickly and creatively.

Once here you will:

  • Work across print and physical mediums.
  • Create and/or resize/reformat documents for different mediums such as large format printing, keynote presentations, saddle stitch booklets and environments to name a few.
  • You’re not a project manager, but to succeed in this role, you will need to have project management skills and an awareness of the bigger picture.
  • Proactively take ownership of the work assigned to you and ensure that tasks are completed in a timely manner, while sometimes working on several projects simultaneously.
  • Work with multi-disciplinary teams, working on big challenges, all with the end-goal of owning creative production execution.
  • Work as a contractor in a large studio, where juggling projects and skill sets are often the norm.
  • Work on a variety of projects where digital, graphic and product design are often integrated
  • Create prototypes of different levels of fidelity to help teams determine the design direction for a project.
  • Collaborate with designers with different backgrounds such as industrial designers, mechanical engineers and interaction designers.

Relevant experience and mindsets:

  • 3+ years relevant experience in Graphic Design, Production, or New Media.
  • While fluency in the Adobe Creative Suite is required, success in this role is less about one or two programs and more about learning agility with new tools. It’s also about curiosity and flexibility with how to produce the best deliverable in the right way.
  • You have a passion for design and detail and excellent written and communication skills.
  • You are as comfortable with an x-acto knife as you are with a keyboard, and are eager to roll up your sleeves and make cool stuff.
  • Additional desired skills/experience: Physical prototyping, book-binding, comp building, designing/installing large scale room displays, basic audio and video editing, designing Powerpoint and Keynote templates, illustration, digital experience and basic HTML/PHP editing
