Product Designer

In a nutshell:

IDEO in London is looking for a Product Designer to join our team. As a Product Designer at IDEO you will create product designs and experiences that have a genuine impact on people’s lives. You’ll contribute to strengthening the product design point of view at IDEO by working across disciplines to bring your perspective to every project.

Why is this role important for IDEO's work?

Product Designers make the largest impact with our clients and customers by turning bold new ideas into tangible product and experiences. At various stages of the process this can mean different things; whether building out quick and dirty physical concepts for user testing, designing CAD prototypes, or partnering with outsourced build shops to make final models - your ability to bring your team’s ideas to life will directly correlate to engaged users and customers, and excited clients!

Once you're here, you will:

Work on a range of projects, such as:

  • Smart device systems that holistically bridge the physical and digital world.
  • Brand projects where you’ll help define and visualize the signature elements that will differentiate the brand and communicate its value proposition.
  • Space experiences where you are physically differentiating product offers or service touch points in a retail or a hospitality setting.
  • Projects that combine innovative new foods, packaging, and brands.
  • Designing products in complex manufacturing and service structures, with a circular economy lens and solution.
  • Collaborate with people from different backgrounds such as interaction designers and developers, business and organisation designers, communication designers, and design researchers.
  • Become part of a culture that lets you both learn and teach while working with people outside of your immediate area of expertise.
  • Be challenged to think more holistically.

Some previous projects to check out:

  • Envisioning Products As Holistic Experiences - Executive Design Director Thomas Overthun is a product designer who has worked at IDEO for nearly 25 years. He’s been the lead designer for a wide range of products we use in our daily lives, and, over the years, he’s observed an evolution of the product design discipline. He believes the key to bringing great products to market lies in a holistic approach.
  • For Kids, A New Tactile Way to Learn Coding - Project Bloks, a Google research project that enables developers to accelerate the field of tangible programming for kids.
  • A Digital Display to Measure Energy Use - Help buildings communicate and display environmental efficiency.
  • Designing the Future of Urban Farming - Help INFARM develop the vision, products, and services for their B2B vertical farming offer.

What does IDEO offer you?

Ask anyone at IDEO London why they like working here, and they will say it’s our people and the diversity of challenges. It’s a place where you can solve complex challenges for our clients or the organisation, alongside thoughtful, intelligent individuals who lead with curiosity, empathy, and optimism.

We certainly work hard, but we also intentionally focus on our culture to design events where we pause, create, and connect.

We encourage our community to bring their whole selves to work and respect the need for work-life balance. IDEO provides you support and development throughout your time here, while allowing for autonomy in the design process and in your career.

IDEO has had a studio in London for over 30 years. Over that time, we have grown in the scale of our influence and impact. Although we still work across every industry and sector, our consistent purpose to deliver positive impact through design, has meant that we have enabled companies all over the world to be creatively competitive.

Relevant experience and mindset:

  • A product design degree complemented with professional experience.
  • Experience designing products or experiences that have both physical and digital components.
  • Experience creating packaging archetypes with a brand sensibility.
  • Demonstrated ability to use visuals to communicate your design intent.
  • You’re able to generate ideas quickly without a lot of background information or parameters.
  • Comfort in leading clients and teams through the product design phase of a project.
  • Desire and experience in physical prototyping. Experience with digital prototyping a plus.
  • Experience designing apparel or soft goods products.
  • Experience using Adobe Suite, CAD, and Grasshopper for Rhino or equivalent would be a plus.

Pop quiz:

Please include your answer to the following question in your cover letter.

If you could redesign any object or experience: what would it be, why should it be redesigned, how might you make it better, what would be your design approach?

Please make your answer less than 300 words plus images.

Application requirements and instructions:

To apply, please submit your resume, cover letter, portfolio and pop quiz answer.

Your portfolio should include a range of projects, and highlight the process involved in developing the design or project, as much as the final solution.
