Studio Lead

In a nutshell:

IDEO is partnering with one of our clients in search of a Studio Lead who will join our client’s newly established Design Studio in Minneapolis as one of the founding members. This is a full-time opportunity, with our client not IDEO, located in Minneapolis, MN with opportunity to collaborate closely with designers from IDEO Palo Alto.

Why is this role important?

A Studio Lead will make the biggest impact by leading world-class design through craft leadership, developing talent through strong people leadership, take the lead in hiring talent, and support his or hers leadership team by providing support in crafting and delivering on the business strategy.

Your Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Influence and evolve a culture of “Creative Excellence” and how it is the foundation for the future growth of the Studio’s culture, talent, and business.
  • Guide design teams through project cycles ensuring high quality outcomes.
  • Collaborate with members of the Studio and leadership to map our current expertise and identify gaps within our community, and to prioritize hiring needs to be managed against our hiring plan.
  • Lead efforts around attracting new members, developing, and leveraging our talented design community in a manner that supports our portfolio of work while also maintaining our strong studio culture.
  • Lead the practice of design reviews, and help with integrating critique into our projects and culture.
  • Establish, support and evolve the systems and processes that allow our teams to do great design work
  • Collaborate with leaders from different parts of the organization to facilitate our design work forward into realization

Relevant experience and mindset:

  • Experience working in a creative consulting or agency.
  • Experience in designing holistic offering bridging physical and digital product; experience in service and/or venture design is a plus.  
  • Excellent written and verbal communication in an internal and externally-facing capacity.
  • You’re a confident and flexible leader of interdisciplinary teams where harmonious collaboration is imperative.
  • You’re a systems thinker; you love solving big, hairy problems and can logically visualize complex systems and spaces.
  • You get what it takes to build something.
  • You can articulate a human-centered approach to design and be comfortable going out into the world for inspiration. You understand basic human-centered design philosophy, are comfortable with ambiguity and want to push design methodologies.
  • You can relate to individuals and nurture talent.
  • Confidence in managing strategic projects in complex, “new-to-the-world” content areas
  • You are able to distinguish between “good” and “great” design.
