Outreach Specialist, OpenIDEO (Contract)

In a nutshell:

OpenIDEO is in search of an Outreach Specialist who will help us grow our global community by creating and executing on a strategy for reaching innovators around the world for a new and exciting initiative: OpenIDEO is partnering with the Rockefeller Foundation to launch a first-of-its-kind vision prize around the future of our global food system. This prize will engage a community of participants from all around the world, including influential thought leaders and partner organizations in the field.

Why is the role important to OpenIDEO?

OpenIDEO seeks to maximize impact by bringing communities of innovators together around a topic in the spirit of solving a Challenge too big to solve alone. The Outreach Specialist will work closely with our Marketing Manager to consider how best to reach specific personas and extend an invitation to be a part of this process. This role will be asked to develop strategies both for reaching large numbers of innovators at scale, and considering which voices are not being heard and how to best ensure they are present in the community.

Once you are here you will:

  • Research Challenge Topic (5%): The Outreach Specialist will learn about Challenge topics and ecosystems (if not already familiar), and be able to discuss and build enthusiasm for them amongst our community.
  • Craft Personas and Corresponding Outreach Language (5%): Based on research conducted by the OpenIDEO team and partners, the Outreach Specialist will work with the Marketing Manager to understand target personas and craft outreach language that will best resonate with them.
  • Strategy (10%): Working with the Marketing Manager, the Outreach Specialist will construct a multi-channel outreach strategy. Likely channels: email, social media direct messaging, paid advertising, posting on relevant opportunity boards, developing content-sharing partnerships with organizations, and more. Community-centered and creative mindsets are a must here!
  • Execution (75%): Executing on strategy outlined above. This is the largest component of the role.
  • Tracking and Reporting (5%): Managing lists of organizations contacted, using tracked links, and reporting traffic and anecdotes back to the Challenge teams and partners.

Relevant Experience:

  • Exceptional writing, editing and communication skills.
  • Proven working experience (2-5 years) managing social media channels and/or email campaigns.
  • Genuine enthusiasm and excitement to delve into a fast-paced, highly executional role.
  • Demonstrated creative approaches to problem-solving and content development: exhibit the ability to jump from the creative side to analytical side of outreach.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Background in food systems, food waste, or sustainability.
  • Passion for digital systems: Get excited about a beautifully designed Google Sheet? Love developing organized plans or checklists to work through?
  • Comfortable presenting work and strategy to team and clients.
  • Interest in and passion for social enterprise, social impact, and design.

Contract details:

  • 4 months
  • Part-time: 10-15 hours per week
  • June - September 2019 (with possibility to extend + flexible start date)
  • Should be able to work in-house at IDEO San Francisco
