Editorial Director, Global Marketing

In a nutshell:

IDEO is looking for a senior editor to run our editorial apparatus. You are comfortable in both the business and design worlds, and use that fluency to connect big picture strategy to execution. You know how to coordinate an extended global team and set them up for success as we deploy marketing and communications initiatives both internally and externally.

Why is this role important for IDEO’s work?

Though overseeing editorial projects and workflows is the backbone of your job, you’re a craftsperson who can draft a strong point of view alongside a thought leader, and spin up compelling content for IDEO’s diverse storytelling channels, including its blogs.

To that end, you read omnivorously, keeping pace with the business, cultural, social, and technological trends across IDEO’s domains—organizational change, emerging tech, education, the public sector, food, mobility, health and wellness—and are adept at boiling down complex concepts (blockchain, anyone?) into a smart, human-centered story. IDEO is increasingly focused on launching new ventures, platforms, and tools, and you will be tapped to help guide the public messaging for such initiatives.

This is a global role based out of our San Francisco office and closely connected to marketing teams across our nine offices around the world. You’ll be part of an energetic, highly-connected marketing team that works hard and moves fast to channel IDEO’s thinking and stories through diverse channels. In addition, you will work closely with the IDEO community at large, which spans the US, Europe, and Asia, sharing a keen interest design and its potential to effect positive change in the world.

Once here you will:

  • Run the editorial workings of our global marketing group, coordinating and commissioning content in order to execute broader business strategy
  • Management of IDEO marketing’s editorial contractors, writers, and editors as they craft and edit articles, white papers, presentations, and blog posts
  • Lend editorial direction to immersive expressions of some of our key stories (including video storytelling)
  • Help craft and manage social media campaigns with the digital marketing team, ensuring the right message lands on the right platform appropriately and consistently

Relevant experience:

  • 7-10 years of experience as an editor for creative and forward-looking brands or companies
  • Super-connector who loves supporting people and is happiest when bringing stories and editorial initiatives to life as part of a team
  • Multi-tasker capable of producing, managing, and editing high volumes of content and juggling several priorities at once
  • Business-savvy, facile with key and often complex global business concepts in areas such as design, technology, strategy, and entrepreneurship
  • Has worked closely with content producers (designers, social media teams, etc.) and can coordinate workflows on a multidisciplinary team
  • Sophisticated grasp of marketing metrics and drivers of impact
  • Experience with creating video and audio stories a plus

What does IDEO offer you?

IDEO is a place unlike any other. It’s a place where you can solve diverse, complex challenges for our clients or the organization, alongside thoughtful, intelligent individuals who lead with curiosity, empathy, and optimism. Sure we work hard, but we also intentionally craft moments that allow our community to pause, create, and connect. We encourage our community to bring their whole selves to work, respect the need for work-life balance, and allow for autonomy in the design process and your career.

Application requirements and instructions:

Please apply with resume, cover letter, and portfolio that shows your range. We will only consider applications with writing samples. We are not asking you to create new work for us, instead, we’d love to see some of the things you’ve already written.
