Interaction Designer, Design for Change

In a nutshell:

IDEO San Francisco’s Design for Change studio is primarily focused on helping catalyze change across organizations through design. Our studio is in search of an Interaction Designer who will integrate digital designs into products, systems, services and spaces, and be involved in all aspects of the design process -- from user research to physical and digital prototyping to telling a project story to the client.

Why is this role important for IDEO’s work?

Interaction Designers make the biggest impact by thinking creatively, having a passion for pixels and prototyping.  They love to make graphics move and have a knack for crafting compelling stories. Within our Design for Change studio, our mission is to help leaders and organizations to become more innovative and adaptive to better serve their customers, employees, and society as a whole. We believe that transformation happens by movement, not mandate, and above all else, we need you to roll up your sleeves and inspire action throughout our clients’ iterative change journeys.

In the past, we’ve helped clients address design challenges such as the following:

How might we... and evolve an organization’s purpose through its products, services, and operations?

...establish and evolve minimum viable organizations in line with minimum viable products or services? and operate an innovation lab to influence culture across an organization?

You can read about our previous design case studies here.

Once here you will:

  • Work on projects that solve problems across a variety of industries.
  • Collaborate with designers of different backgrounds such as industrial designers, mechanical engineers, and interaction designers to develop a holistic design for our clients.
  • Create looks like/works like prototypes that help tell a project’s story.
  • Be an advocate of exceptional design.
  • Design websites, apps, and other digital experiences with the end user in mind.

What does IDEO offer you?

IDEO is a place unlike any other. It’s a place where you can solve complex challenges for our clients or the organization, alongside thoughtful individuals who lead with curiosity, empathy, and optimism. Sure we work hard, but we also craft moments that allow our community to pause, create, and connect. We encourage our community to bring their whole selves to work, respect the need for work-life balance, and allow for autonomy in the design process and your career.

  • Passion for visual design: You know the difference between ‘good’ and ‘great’ and are able to work within dynamics that challenge teams, clients, and timelines to deliver excellent design. (Not only can you identify and evangelize best practices, but you’re able to push boundaries and explore new territory).
