Interaction Designer, Design for Learning

In a nutshell:

IDEO’s Design for Learning Studio (D4L), located in San Francisco, is in search of an Interaction Designer with a passion for tackling big questions and a knack for cutting through complexity. We are looking for someone who can't help but see how the things around them could be simpler, clearer, and more connected. You have a particular interest in creating positive social impact and are game to delve into the design of educational experiences. In this role, you'll design ways to scale high touch services and experiences, like one-on-one coaching for college students or special education practices; envision new products and systems to power new school models, find inspiration in new technology to reinvent learning, and bring your elevated sense of design.

Why is this role important for IDEO’s work?

At IDEO we create impact through design. Our goal is to create work that is desirable, feasible, and viable. An interaction designer sits right in that sweet spot - they take a human-centered approach to designing digital products and services, quickly turn big picture strategy into tangible prototypes, and craft compelling stories.

Once here you will:

  • Design and prototype digital experiences with human-centered insights and needs at their core.
  • Help visualize systems that may not currently exist and think about how digital tools are integrated into these systems
  • Think beyond screen UI and integrate the experiences of physical spaces and organizations.
  • You will elevate ideas and interactions with beautiful and thoughtful designs.
  • Collaborate with an incredibly diverse and passionate group of world-class designers and clients from various backgrounds.
  • Conduct user research and translate insights and learnings into digital solutions, prototypes, and storytelling within a digital landscape.
  • Focus on a wide range complex problems to digital work, with an emphasis on learning and education-based solutions. You’ll work across a huge range of questions – from advising edtech startups on their brand and storytelling to working with some of the country’s biggest school systems to develop tools that help students learn.
  • Go out into the world for inspiration, spot opportunities for innovation, and bring inspiration back to our clients and their stakeholders.

Relevant experience:

  • 3-5 years interaction/systems thinking design experience across a variety of digital media or complex system design.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Graphic Design, Interaction Design, New Media or an equivalent degree.
  • Experience in concept ideation, design strategy, and digital prototyping.
  • Ability to tell compelling project stories and bring clients into the design process and what excellence in UX looks like.
  • Systems thinking. You love complex questions and can break things down into tangible designs, visualize underlying systems, design interaction flows, and create elegant interfaces.
  • Conceptualizing and bringing new-to-the-world products to life.
  • Creating digital prototypes at various levels of fidelity to test assumption and advance design.
  • You have strong verbal, written, and presentation skills, and are able to compellingly communicate the story of your design solutions.

What does IDEO offer you?

IDEO is a place unlike any other. It’s a place where you can solve diverse, complex challenges for our clients or the organization, alongside thoughtful, intelligent individuals who lead with curiosity, empathy, and optimism. Sure we work hard, but we also intentionally craft moments that allow our community to pause, create, and connect. We encourage our community to bring their whole selves to work, respect the need for work-life balance, and allow for autonomy in the design process and your career.

IDEO’s education studio designs products, services, and systems that improve experiences for learners of all ages.  This could be as tangible as designing a tablet-based learning platform, and as far-reaching as redesigning an entire education system.  We nerd out over education trends and cool kid ideas in equal measure – and we hope you do too.
