As an Environments Designer at IDEO, you will bring your ability to build your way from ambiguity to confidence alongside designers of different backgrounds to create holistic, branded experiences that address human needs through physical and digital environments. On design teams, you will lead the social/spatial design component of a project, and envision the system in which tools, spaces, and people interact. With a “bias toward build” and a penchant for getting your hands dirty, you’ll offer your unique perspective and strategic eye on projects across every industry–retail, hospitality, energy, education, entertainment and more.
Environments designers and architecture/interior design trained professionals make great IDEOers! Fluidly designing at the scale of the object up through the system and from the abstract to making things tangible is central to how we design holistic experiences. Building confidence through prototyping and getting feedback from actual human behavior is central to our process. At IDEO, we like to think about spacial design from a human-centered point of view.
IDEO is a place unlike any other. It is a place where you can solve diverse challenges for our clients and the organization, alongside thoughtful individuals who lead with curiosity, empathy, and optimism. Sure we work hard, but we also craft moments that allow our community to pause, create, and connect. We encourage our community to respect the need for work-life balance and allow for autonomy in the design process and your career.
Our ideal candidate will have broad interests in design strategy, prototyping, multi-media, marketing, and brand strategy, and possess a range of tools to communicate design intent. This person must be able to see a project through all the way from the beginning to the end.
Qualified applicants will have completed undergraduate or graduate degrees in Architecture, Interior Architecture, or Exhibit Design. They will have 5-8 years of experience in applicable areas of space design such as retail, hospitality, exhibit, and urban design.
To apply, please submit your resume, cover letter, and portfolio. Your portfolio should include at least 4 examples of work-related projects. In particular, we want to hear about the process involved in developing the design or project.
