Design Research Operations Specialist

IDEO San Francisco is in search of a Design Research Operations Specialist who will work with project teams to manage research operations across projects, help create research plans, and recruit participants. 

Why is this role important for IDEO’s work?

Design research is the cornerstone of our human-centered approach to design thinking. The Design Research Operations Specialist plays a critical role in helping shape research, empower teams, and find participants and experts to give our designers and clients unique perspectives on the problem we are designing for. This person’s ability to operationalize research systems for projects and resourcefully identify and hand-pick the right participants is crucial for fueling design inspiration. Furthermore, they hold a broad view of our global research efforts and are able to help the community build better processes that enable us to push the edges of human-centered research.

Help build the future of Design Research Operations at IDEO, support the design and creation of resources—tools, assets and relationships—and find great people to participate in research and inspire design.

  • Create and execute on a recruiting plan for each project with different ways of reaching people and screening them, including targeted outreach via social channels, relevant organizations, or working with external recruiting partners. Apply your intuition and instincts while screening respondents to ensure they are appropriate for a particular project.
  • Manage the project recruit infrastructure, guidelines, and templates on each of your projects
  • Co-design and coordinate the logistics behind participant interviews, group discussions and events supporting each project team’s design research needs locally and in the field.
  • Promote ethical research practices and adherence to data protection regulations.

Relevant experience and mindset

  • 4-6 years of relevant experience in an intense people focused role such as; program manager or executive assistant
  • Demonstrated curiosity for the unique concerns and constraints of a variety of industries from medical to consumer products to financial services
  • An ability to show empathy and passion for understanding human behavior 
  • Able to push teams to think out-of-the-box, while providing structure
  • Superb communication skills - the ability to clearly and simply communicate complex concepts and methods to different audiences
  • Ability to balance the big picture and day-to-day tasks, with strong prioritization skills
  • Experience working with artists or designers is a plus; as well as background in research
