CLIENT | Head of Design Research

IDEO is working with one of their clients, Moon, based out of Palo Alto, CA, to help them find a Head of Design Research.

Who we are

Moon Creative Lab is a design-led innovation hub that powers the creation of new businesses for Mitsui & Co, one of Japan’s largest organizations. As a 150 year-old company, Mitsui is in pursuit to become a more future-forward, entrepreneurial company. Through Moon, our mission is to help unlock the creativity of its 44,000 strong global workforce and build innovative businesses that will have an exponential impact on Mitsui and the rest of the world.

We surface the best and wildest business ideas from Mitsui employees and provide the resources and conditions to light the way to a creative future. At Moon, you will:

  • Address real human needs that have far-reaching social impact.
  • Work across disciplines, across industries, and across cultures.
  • Start with people and leverage the beauty and messiness of human-centered design.

Moon is an incubator for dreams. And we’re looking for people who are passionate about unlocking people’s innate creativity and designing impactful businesses. Come join us!

Who we’re looking for (you, hopefully):

As the Head of Design Research, you will lead the discipline across the Palo Alto and Tokyo studios. This includes everything from looking after the growth of researchers within the organization, to developing a strong POV on the future of DR and how it can bring success to all the ventures incubated within Moon. As this role will be part of Moon’s leadership team and reporting directly to the CCO, you are a leader who is comfortable or has experience leading with curiosity, collaboration, and an entrepreneurial mindset. You are passionate about using their toolbox of research methods to help lead and teach others how to generate insights for design, from ethnographic observation to in-home interviews to large-scale quantitative surveys/analytics to best inform and inspire design.

How you’ll help Moon create impact:

At Moon, we start with people. That means going out and finding users, sitting down with them, and listening to their needs and ideas. Our teams and the entrepreneurs we host at Moon Creative Lab need designers who can build a research plan, bring an element of rigor and play to ethnographic research and observation, and who will advocate for all the users we’re designing for. Human-centered research is what drives great design and innovation for our entrepreneurs.

What you’ll be doing at Moon:

Leading the Craft + Growing the Discipline

As you will represent the Design Research discipline within Moon as a senior leader, you will develop a point of view on the future of this discipline. This means defining what the discipline stands for within Moon, how it works with other disciplines and teams, and developing a future vision of where the discipline can go.

You will also work with the Head of HR and recruiting team to attract and hire new design research talent, as well as mentor junior Design Researchers to support their career growth and professional development. In addition to this, you will be supporting the staffing needs for Design Researchers, both for internal projects and the new ventures.

Providing Design Direction + Being Hands On

You will provide thought-provoking and breakthrough creative direction to project teams, advocating solutions that are fitted to users’ needs. At times, you may also find yourself stepping into lead other Design Researchers (in Palo Alto and Tokyo) during the product development process.

Collaborating with Leadership

You will work closely with other design heads to ensure an enjoyable user experience across all products, constantly sharing ideas and learnings. You will also partner with product, engineering, and venture heads to ensure projects are well-defined, impactful, and successfully executed.

What you’ll encounter at Moon:

Moon is building a design culture driven by a growth mindset and strong opportunities for learning and development. This is your chance to work across disciplines, across portfolios, and across cultures. One day you might be innovating around healthcare for pets and another you might be building a platform that makes it easier to finance Bollywood movies. From the beginning, you’ll help define the work, refine the work, and launch it to market. And you’ll create businesses that make people’s lives better.

The must-haves:

  • 8-10 years of professional research experience in-house, ideally at startup companies
  • Experience leading and coaching qualitative research, with familiarity with a variety of methodologies and processes: design research operations, prototyping to learn, user experience, ethnographic research, quantitative/hybrid research and data-driven insights, and remote research.
  • Ability to jump into leading and even executing various parts of research. We’re looking for a leader that can teach by doing.
  • An understanding of how to create change and push ideas to market, such as building new ventures.
  • Highly collaborative and flexible, with the ability to stretch across skill sets and roles dynamically to bridge different parts of the business
  • Strategic approach and high-level thinking when achieving organizational goals
  • Ability to inspire and guide teams through craft expertise.
  • Strong communication and storytelling skills, using various mediums and formats
  • Ability to thrive in an ambiguous and rapidly changing environment.
  • Experience applying research insights to create design solutions

The nice-to-haves:

  • Experience living/working in Japan, working directly with Japanese companies, or other relevant cross-cultural/international work experience
  • Ability to occasionally travel to Japan

Sounds fun, right?

If you’re curious, please apply directly to Moon's job board with your resume, cover letter, and a link to some examples of your past work or a portfolio. This application will close on Monday, June 8th 2020.

Note: Moving forward, we will only consider applications that are submitted to Moon's site. Please do not apply on the IDEO jobs page.
