Algorithms Designer

In a nutshell:

IDEO is looking for data-driven designers to join our Shanghai location in Fall 2019.  We’re looking for people who can creatively apply data science and algorithms design in the real world, who can continually learn new things (both technical and non-technical) independently, and who don’t need a boss to get stuff done.

To be clear, this position is for a Fall 2019 start. We will be reviewing applications and conducting interviews, but the start date would be later in the year.

Why is this role important for IDEO’s work?

This is a new role to IDEO Shanghai and one that we hope will be an exciting opportunity for you.

IDEO is growing its data science capability and team in Shanghai, in service of using AI to make things better for humans. As an Algorithms Designer, you will make the biggest impact by designing intelligent systems, products, services, and experiences. We count on our algorithms design colleagues to lead their project teams in data-driven thinking and provide expertise on the positive potential of intersecting intelligent technologies with human-centered design.

Once here you will:

To be successful at IDEO, a passion for human-centered design is vital. You’ll need to engage fully with the creative process of putting the needs of users and people first. Not only will you practice your craft on project work -- you’ll then share your way of thinking and your approach with other designers -- from interaction design, to environments design, to industrial design, and beyond.

What does IDEO offer you?

IDEO is a place unlike any other. It’s a place where you can solve diverse, complex challenges for our clients or the organization, alongside thoughtful, intelligent individuals who lead with curiosity, empathy, and optimism. Sure we work hard, but we also intentionally craft moments that allow our community to pause, create, and connect. We encourage our community to bring their whole selves to work, respect the need for work-life balance, and allow for autonomy in the design process and your career.

As an Algorithms Designer, we provide the opportunity for you to:

  • Shape the emerging data and algorithms design discipline across IDEO globally, by demonstrating what it means for human centered data science to have a disproportionately positive effect on people’s experiences in China
  • Practice data science in a human-centered way, and to treat data as a richly complex and flexible medium for design
  • Build empathy for the end-users of your work, by going out in the field with your team to experience things first-hand like watching a surgical procedure, exploring the house of a hoarder, or flying a flight simulator

Relevant experience and mindset:

We're looking for people who demonstrate visible experience writing reusable code (probably mostly Python) to do exploratory data analysis, simulation, data visualization, and various machine learning and optimization techniques. This could mean a portfolio of open source contributions, personal projects, presentations, or other things that show that you were passionate about a subject, took some initiative to learn about it, and applied it to a real problem.

Just as importantly, we’re looking for people with an entrepreneurial mindset, who are excited about being part of a newly established team, and energized by the prospect of bringing others along a journey to understand the value of data and algorithms in a design context.

Beyond the above requirements, our ideal colleague:

  • is interested in or even fluent in design thinking
  • complements our existing team in unique and unexpected ways
  • is not afraid to learn something new independently
  • likes using math to solve problems
  • may have professional consulting experience
  • continuously strives to improve on writing and speaking
  • is comfortable with ambiguity and freedom and can self manage
  • strives to be an excellent and versatile computer programmer
  • is eager to contribute to our culture of exploration, learning, and diversity of thought
  • isn't scared by words like Python, TensorFlow, scikit-learn, SQL, d3.js, map-reduce, or R and, better yet, knows how to use them
  • is fluent in both Mandarin and English

Cover letter:

In your cover letter, please include answers to the following:

Tell us about a project on which you wrote data analysis code as part of a team. What went well on the project and what would you do differently next time? URLs to examples (slides, reports, apps, code) are encouraged.

What excites you about applying data science at IDEO?
