Community Manager, OpenIDEO (6 month contract)

OpenIDEO is in search of a Community Manager to support our open innovation Challenges and  online communities for the next three to six months with the possibility of extension. As the team members closest to participants, Community Managers work to support the diverse innovators and organizations we engage. Community managers are also responsible for helping evaluate Challenge ideas, developing presentations for client workshops and synthesizing insights from the innovation process. You will  be working on a challenge focused on health and bringing together patients who suffer from Eczema. This role is based in San Francisco, requires tremendous communication skills, an ability to think strategically, and a passion for fostering community and supporting social innovation online.

Community Managers at OpenIDEO have a unique vantage point in a fast-paced open innovation journey, designing the conditions for inclusive collaboration in both online and offline spaces. Community Managers act as translators, cross-pollinators, activators, and community champions across the OpenIDEO community. This is a great role for someone who is deeply curious, can get lost reading for hours, whose favorite tool is the written word, and thrives in ambiguous, dynamic, fast-paced work environment.  

Once here, you will

  • Guide community members through the design thinking and innovation journey by posting comments on their contributions, connecting different community members and encouraging collaboration, helping with technical wayfinding in the Challenge process, and generating Challenge resources (webinars, toolkits, etc.)
  • Identify trends, opportunity areas for design, and synthesize both qualitative and quantitative insights into client-facing reports and presentations
  • Surface compelling contributions and standout collaborations to support storytelling to sponsors, partners, and the broader OpenIDEO community
  • Build scalable systems to manage community members with high potential for community leadership roles in both online and offline engagements
  • Collaborate with the team to design, produce and facilitate both in-person and digital events
  • Dive into multiple Challenge topics with agility, while building enthusiasm and momentum for these Challenge topics within our broader community

Relevant experience and mindset

  • Exceptional, clear, and concise written communication skills
  • Experience with quantitative and qualitative data analysis
  • Design sensitivities and working knowledge of human-centered design, particularly as applied to a global community of innovators
  • Ability to empathize, work with, understand, and hold many different communities, perspectives, and points of view at the same time
  • Up-to-date on global issues - bonus if interested in health - and willing to dive deep on multiple topics
  • Unfaltering and exemplary time management skills
  • Excellent ability to craft and deliver content for in-person and virtual presentations, workshops, and meetings with various audiences
  • Penchant for reading and a love of research and digital exploration
  • A passion for and understanding of digital communities

Individuals who will flourish in this role are intrapreneurs possessing deep skills in communications and writing, project management, and client relationship management. We also seek a candidate with a particular emphasis on listening and learning from a broad global community, both online and offline. We are an entrepreneurial team and seek someone who is thrives in ambiguity and learns through experimentation.

Bonus points, but not required–if you have visual design skills, especially in adobe creative suite and keynote.

Bonus points, but not required–if you speak a second language, have worked in communities with backgrounds different than yours.

Contract Details

  • Contract is scoped at 3-6 months, with potential to extend. And potential to convert to full-time down the line. 
  • Located in San Francisco, CA
  • Some domestic and international travel may be required
