Graphic Designer

In a nutshell:

We are looking for a mid-level graphic designer who can work in multi-disciplinary teams to bring to life strategies, stories, and ideas. The ideal candidate has a strong foundation in graphic design and may have experience in brand identity, packaging, print, digital, motion and/or illustration.

Being a Graphic Designer at IDEO means you’ll join the Communication Design community. You will work on a diverse portfolio of projects that span engaging spaces, storytelling, and organizational culture, as well as packaging, brand identity, and interactive experiences. Working at IDEO means you’ll tackle all aspects of the design process—from user research to physical prototyping and communicating the project story to the client. We are looking for designers who are curious, can think strategically as well as visually, and want to blend these skills to tell powerful stories that have an impact.

We value the diversity of thought and encourage our designers to bring their own unique style and visual “voice” to each and every design challenge we face. Are you all about that Swiss grid? Or maybe you love hand-drawn typography? Maybe collages are what gets you excited, or 8-bit pixel perfect illustration? Or maybe you’re a design chameleon and it’s all of those things. This could be the gig for you.

Once you are here you will:

  • Work on projects that solve (sometimes highly complex) problems across a whole variety of industries.
  • Collaborate with designers with different backgrounds such as Industrial Designer, Interaction Designers, Design Researchers, Business Designers, and Environments Designers to develop holistic products, services, and solutions for our clients.
  • Create visual communication pieces and prototypes that help tell a project’s story.
  • Bring to life new brands, products, and services with the end user in mind.
  • Be an advocate of exceptional design.

What does IDEO offer you?

IDEO is a place unlike any other. It’s a place where you can solve diverse, complex challenges for our clients or the organization, alongside thoughtful, intelligent individuals who lead with curiosity, empathy, and optimism. Sure we work hard, but we also intentionally craft moments that allow our community to pause, create, and connect. We encourage our community to bring their whole selves to work, respect the need for work-life balance, and allow for autonomy in the design process and your career.

Relevant experience:

  • 3-5 years graphic design experience across a variety of digital media
  • Bachelor's degree in Graphic Design, New Media, Fine Arts or an equivalent degree
  • Experience in concept ideation, design strategy, art direction and production
  • Ability to tell compelling project stories to clients
  • Experience working with designers from different backgrounds and integrating your design ideas with theirs
  • You have strong verbal, written, and visual presentation skills. You understand the value of design and brand within a business context.
  • Extensive experience across a variety of media including a fluency in Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop. Additional skills in Sketch, After Effects, or digital prototyping tools are a bonus

Some previous projects to check out:

  • PNC Wealth Insight: Conducted deep field research with wealth managers and utilized real client data to design clear and concise visualizations that give investors the right level of insight.
  • Society of Grownups: Together with Mass Mutual, we created a sort of master’s program for adulthood, where the curriculum covers everything from investing in a 401K to having that hard talk about a budget to how to pick good, cheap wine.  IDEO helped build the new venture from the ground up—designing a brand identity, a digital platform with some of the most sophisticated financial planning tools in the industry, and a hip brick-and-mortar locale.
  • Two Kinds of Athletes, One Strong Brand: Designing a brand that served both elite athletes and everyday fitness enthusiasts.

Application instructions:

To apply, please submit your resume, cover letter, and portfolio (or link to). Your portfolio should include at least 4 examples of work-related projects. Bonus points if you include 2-3 projects you have worked on for fun. And toss in some design work that has recently inspired you.
