Senior Communication Designer

In a nutshell:

Communication Designers at IDEO make the biggest impact by being visual storytellers. They work on projects across print, digital, environments, and video for a wide range of brands, services, products and experiences. We are looking for designers who have strong conceptual and technical visual skills and who excel in blending strategy and design to craft powerful narratives about our work and the world around us. Working at IDEO means you’ll be in a highly collaborative environment and take on all aspects of the design process from user research to physical prototyping to telling the project story to the client. We want designers to bring their unique style and visual voice to each design challenge we face.

A bit about you...

  • You have a strong portfolio and elevated sense of design, color and typography. You know the difference between “good” and “great” and are able to navigate team dynamics, clients and timelines to deliver excellent design.
  • You're passionate, playful, experimental, and maybe a bit weird. You've got a hands-on, pitch-in attitude and are up to the task, big or small.  You’re a perfectionist, but you’re also comfortable playing with rough, unfinished ideas along the way toward the final concepts. In other words, you can see the forest and the trees. You're inquisitive and love turning chaos into clarity.
  • You have strong verbal and visual presentation skills, as well as an articulate point of view about design. You're comfortable through all phases of a project, from translating verbal ideas into rough visual concepts to creating production-ready artwork.
  • You're ready to learn from failure and iterate to learn faster. You take chances, aren’t afraid to fail and learn along the way, and can handle critiques and the unexpected with a smile. You're optimistic, inquisitive, and open to new ideas and ways of working. You’re energized by surprise and passionate about pushing beyond expectations.
  • You love working in teams and across disparate groups and design challenges. You’re the ultimate collaborator, but you’re also a self-starter — able to marshal the right people and resources to start conversations, generate ideas, and get things done.
  • You’re service-oriented and comfortable collaborating with clients from a variety of industries.

Once you're here, you might...

  • Set the visual design direction of projects through exploration, strategy, graphic design and storytelling.
  • Tackle challenges across a variety of industries, that integrate digital, print and product design, and that range from sprints (1-2 weeks) to longer term engagements (6+ months).
  • Collaborate alongside designers with diverse backgrounds such as industrial design, mechanical engineering, writing, and interaction design.
  • Create prototypes of different levels of fidelity to help teams determine the design direction for a project.
  • Help clients empathize with users by creating deliverables that tell a compelling story.

Relevant experience

  • At least 3-5 years of visual/digital/brand design and production experience across a variety of media ( i.e. print, interaction, art direction, web, motion, environments, video, photo).
  • A Bachelor’s degree or higher in Graphic Design, Interaction Design, New Media, or an equivalent degree.
  • Experience in concept ideation, design research/strategy, and prototyping, and a curiosity for learning and experimenting with new methods of designing visual/digital experiences, products and services.
  • Extensive proficiency in graphic design and interaction tools including InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, and Sketch plus experience or familiarity with HTML, CSS, and AfterEffects.
