Communication Designer & Visual Storyteller

In a nutshell:

As a Communication Designer and Visual Storyteller at IDEO you need:

  • Crafty hands to create world-class design
  • A curious mind to learn new things and push your creative edge
  • A strategic perspective to see the bigger picture
  • An empathic heart to lead with human needs

IDEO Munich is in search of a Visual Storyteller who holds the craft of creating concise and comprehensive narratives and expresses them in immersive experiences across various media.

A Communication Designer & Visual Storyteller works or consults on a wide range of things: brand identities and full brand implementation, graphics for retail spaces, packaging, workbooks and publications, rapid prototypes for consumer testing, illustrations of business ecosystems, exhibition graphics, user interfaces and even rolling your sleeves up to help create beautiful presentation decks.

Why is this role important for IDEO’s work?

Visual Storytellers make the biggest impact by being an inspiring craft to the rest of the studio and seeing an opportunity to design in almost everything.

Their skill set is critical to our work because they are constantly on the outlook for new things and vehicles for our stories to unfold.  What has been a book or a video today might be a VR installation or an immersive Sensescape tomorrow. Pushing the edge of our expressions and formats within the studio will be key.

We count on them to embody the belief that Creativity can give simple, human and delightful answers to the most complex problems in the world and encourage others to be creative as well by applying design to systemic problems and making the answer visual and tangible.

What does IDEO offer you?

IDEO is a place unlike any other. It’s a place where you can solve diverse, complex challenges for our clients or the organisation, alongside thoughtful, intelligent individuals who lead with curiosity, empathy, and optimism. Sure we work hard, but we also intentionally craft moments that allow our community to pause, create, and connect. We encourage our community to bring their whole selves to work, respect the need for work-life balance, and allow for autonomy in the design process and your career.

As a Visual Storyteller in Munich, we provide the opportunity for you to:

  • Design world-class visual stories for some of the biggest clients in the world
  • Turn powerful strategy into concise, compelling narratives
  • Push the edge of visual design
  • Be embedded in multi-disciplinary teams
  • Work on big systemic challenges across various industries

Relevant experience and mindset:

Key skills:

  • Be Visual & Tangible. We don’t want to bore you with a list of technical applications. You know what it takes to create cutting-edge exceptional visual stories in the physical and digital world, and we assume you know your tools and are willing to learn new ones.
  • Strive for Simplicity.  An ability to understand systemic challenges and turn it into a concise, compelling and tangible outcome.
  • Collaborate. Being a team player will be key, as you will be a visual catalyst for lots of doing and thinking of your team. Strong collaboration skills within the context of multidisciplinary teams and also with clients will be essential.
  • Be Hybrid. Being digitally literate and feeling comfortable to design digital touchpoints as much as physical ones. You are comfortable being continuously pushed out of your comfort zone and adopt new vehicles to prototype, test and learn. This can go from running an interview, mocking up a website or hacking electronics.
  • Carry a Strategic Curiosity. Having a strong curiosity to get better at systemic and strategic thinking, in order to grow a solid systematic understanding of companies, offer, business, brand, and organization.
  • 3+ years working with and for clients on various design challenges

Helpful overlaps with other disciplines:

Working at IDEO means you will use integrated design to create holistic solutions to complex challenges in a diverse collective of talented people from multidisciplinary backgrounds. Therefore our people need to have depth in at least one discipline but a border more generalistic view on others. As we are in the process of building an excited new team in this field, your interest and passion for other things will be important, and there will be wiggle-space and potential to shape and amplify the role that you are embodying.

  • Purpose & Brand. Creating or re-discovering a meaningful and relevant purpose for a brand inside and outside and building a strong Brand upon this.
  • Writing. If you love writing and the clarity of thought it requires, it will be beneficial for the work you do.
  • Design research / Customer needs. As everything we do is rooted in human-centeredness, it would be great if you are at least equipped with lots of empathy and curiosity for people‘s needs and motivations.

To apply, please submit your CV, cover letter, and portfolio. Your portfolio should include at least 4 examples of work-related projects. In particular, we want to hear about the process involved in developing the design or project. Bonus points if you include 2-3 projects you have worked on for fun. Deadline is Friday 29th June 2018.
