Business Development Associate, Design for Health

In a nutshell:

We’re looking for a Business Development Associate to join our Design for Health Studio in San Francisco. In this role, you will have the chance to define client relationships and partner closely with design leaders in translating challenges and questions into opportunities for innovation.

Why is this role important for IDEO's work?

As a Business Development Associate at IDEO, you will have the opportunity to work across functional boundaries of business by playing different roles and using a dynamic set of skills. For example, you will partner with our design leaders and community in identifying interesting, high-potential client relationships and projects. You will also design briefs that meet the needs of our clients, our design community, and business.

Once here you will:

Showcase and develop critical thinking, storytelling skills, and business know-how. Things you will have an opportunity to do in this role:

  • Find the overlap between our clients and IDEO: A key component of your role is to understand what our clients are asking for, what they need, and how that overlaps with IDEO’s craft and business vision. This will be the starting point for crafting engagements and activating teams.
  • Contribute your point of view in the healthcare space: You will be asked to bring your experience and passions to help shape the stories we tell and the work we do. We are looking for someone who has demonstrated a point of view in some of the following areas: healthcare, wellness, digital health, population health, medical devices, humanizing technology, designing for augmented intelligence, or venture design.
  • Communicate IDEO’s value in compelling ways: Business development is where IDEO’s design and storytelling process begins.
  • Understand and craft our design projects: You will be responsible for looking at the landscape of design at IDEO to understand the core and edges of our content, methodologies, and process. You will be asked to bring that knowledge to bear in scoping project approaches, teams and fees that meet the client’s objectives.
  • Scope our design work: We need you to quickly grasp the implementation and build process of designing and bringing our products and services to market.
  • Enable us to work smarter and better: You will support the “business” of doing business development. Qualifying leads, writing proposals, guiding relationships and communications with clients, and navigating the internal processes of scoping projects and assigning teams are all critical to your role.

Relevant experience:

  • Undergraduate degree preferred
  • Minimum of 3 years of professional experience in a dynamic environment, preferably in a client-facing role
  • Client service skills. Experience in building meaningful, trust-based relationships with people inside and outside of an organization.
  • Professional experience in the health space such as healthcare, wellness, digital health, population health, and medical devices.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • The ability to multi-task and work efficiently and effectively in a dynamic, fast-paced environment
  • Self-starter who is open, curious, and passionate about engaging with new challenges

Nice to haves

  • Experience in facilitating, public speaking, consulting, and/or project management
  • Fluency in the language of the design process
  • Experience working with development teams, as well as familiarity with the process of designing, building and launching design projects all the way through product launch
  • Consistent track record of building high impact engagements
