Business Development Associate / Program Manager, Legal Design + Innovation Team

In a nutshell:

IDEO is in search of a Business Development Associate / Program Manager to join our Legal Design + Innovation Practice.  IDEO’s Legal + Innovation Practice brings human-centered design methods to the legal industry to solve complex systemic challenges.  We’re looking for a teammate who is a combination of ambassador, apprentice, corral-er, and strategist.  Whether you have been a practicing attorney or come from a background in client services, business development, or project management, our priority it to find someone as enthusiastic as us about reimagining the future of the legal profession.  

This position will be based in IDEO’s San Francisco office.

Once here, you will...

  • Field incoming leads, qualify new potential clients and collaborate with the Legal Innovation + Design team to ensure qualified opportunities are developed and supported. You will maintain visibility and provide regular updates on in-process and emerging leads.
  • Act as a project manager, coordinating and managing many of the details of client projects.  Provide support to client teams during projects.  Partner with the IDEO Design + Innovation team to ensure scope and direction of project is on schedule and receives the necessary support and resources.  
  • Curate a portfolio of stories and assets that showcase how IDEO adds value in relation to different design challenges in the legal industry. You will design and express compelling project proposals; building, shaping and crafting these stories to continually push our external conversations will be a large part of your mandate.
  • Build cross-discipline relationships across IDEO in order to effectively help generate and capture written, verbal and visual input from IDEO leadership and design teams in a collaborative way.  As a Business Development Associate, you need to be a nimble connector that gets people around you excited about and engaged in the new business process.
  • Be deeply immersed within a design culture made up of multiple disciplines, where the scoping of design projects and creating learning opportunities for project teams is paramount. Because of this, an openness and desire to understand all the various aspects of design – and specifically IDEO’s design thinking approach – are critical.

Relevant experience and mindset:

  • 4-5 years of experience in client services, management consulting, business development, project management. 
  • Passionate, self-motivated, and an inspiring champion of human-centered lawyering.
  • Experience in conducting research via data gathering and conversation and synthesizing this data into meaningful and relevant internal and client communications.
  • Facility and comfort with developing connections with people inside and outside of an organization.  Comfort collaborating with multidisciplinary design teams in a non-hierarchical organization.
  • The ability to multi-task, work efficiently and effectively in a dynamic, fast-paced, and ambiguous environment
  • Qualified candidates should be familiar with a presentation application like PowerPoint or Keynote, as well as collaborative document sharing services.  Comfort and fluency with Adobe InDesign, and Illustrator are a big bonus.  
  • Strong presentation skills are a plus.  
  • Exposure to or experience in the legal industry is a bonus.
