Business Designer

In a nutshell:

IDEO London is looking for a full time Business Designer to join us in the coming months.  The ideal candidate loves to craft and build new businesses and understands how (and why) designing products and services can drive strategic growth for our clients. We are looking for someone with a depth of experience in business model design, market analysis, financial modeling and implementation.

Please note the application deadline is 21st February, 2020.

Once here you will:

  • Act as a core team member working alongside your fellow designers to design and evolve clients’ products and services in ways that increase viability and drive strategic growth.
  • Inspire your fellow designers through other offers and business models in the market today.
  • Collaborate with clients to understand their business challenges and growth opportunities.
  • Use discovery-driven planning and financial modeling to explore the business model possibilities behind design concepts and to shape and influence their design.
  • Identify key assumptions that need to be true for a business to succeed and design experiments to test those assumptions.
  • Design and recommend new capabilities, organizational structures, strategic assets, and operating models to help clients’ drive their own innovation.

Relevant experience:

  • 3-5 years of industry experience in one of the following areas: product management, finance, business intelligence/analytics, retail, management consulting, CPG/FMCG, marketing (product or brand), hospitality, operations, or human capital.
  • Experience taking an idea from theory and analysis into a market launch — either as an entrepreneur, member of a start-up team, or as an intrapreneur (e.g. product manager).
  • Comfort with executive level clients and stakeholders, working as a collaborator and advisor, and the ability to confidently and credibly share your point of view and expertise.
  • Ability to work in an ambiguous and dynamic environment and collaborate with multidisciplinary design teams in a non-hierarchical organization.
  • Excellence in highlighting the financial potential of new offers or ventures through complex business model development, scenario planning, forecasting, and/or in-market experimentation, with a depth of experience using Excel as a baseline.
  • Outstanding verbal and written communication skills.

Application Process:

The application asks for three documents. All three documents are required for your application to be considered.

  1. CV

  2. Cover Letter explaining why you are interested in IDEO

  3. Two Project Snapshots. 500 words max, plus any relevant images. Instructions for a project snapshot are included below.

What is a project snapshot?

We would like to get a more holistic understanding of your industry experience and past work. Below we offer up three moments. Please choose two of the three moments and describe a different project that speaks to the prompt and tells us about how you approached the situation. The goal is not to review the entire project, but provide only the context needed to focus on this moment in particular.

  • A moment of balancing human desires with business needs
  • A moment you communicated a strategy with both qualitative and quantitative data
  • A moment you experimented with or prototyped a product, service, or experience in a focused, scrappy way to test an assumption

Remember, this is not to exceed 500 words in total. We are most interested in the substance of your answers, not the aesthetics of your submission.

Application timing and stages

Please submit your resume, cover letter, and project snapshots no later than 21st February, 2020. We will be reviewing applications on a rolling basis and candidates are encouraged to apply earlier than the deadline. We will notify candidates if they are moving forward in the process in late February or early March.

Candidates who advance to a first round interview will have a video conversation with an IDEOer about their background and their interest in the role.  Candidates who advance to the second round will have a mix of case interviews and behavioral interviews. Third round interviews typically include meeting studio leadership and more of the design community.
