Business Designer

In a nutshell:

IDEO is currently seeking a Business Designer for our London studio. This role requires a unique blend of real-world experience, business theory, entrepreneurial passion, and boardroom polish. You will work as a member of IDEO’s multidisciplinary teams to create market-leading offerings, business models, and ventures for clients.

Why is this role important for IDEO’s work?

At IDEO we believe that successful strategy formulation happens when we can tangibly launch concepts to target users, learn in context, and iterate. This means understanding client goals, capabilities and market context; developing insights from primary and secondary research; exploring and defining business opportunities; developing financial assumptions and projections; creating tangible concepts and solutions through design; testing hypotheses by engaging stakeholders, experts, and users in creative ways; communicating a vision or value proposition; and helping our clients go to market.

To do this we use a model that begins with desirability, and once we understand what people care about and want, we assess the feasibility of the solutions we propose to address those needs (which is often about systems and technology), and finally we look to understand the viability for the client organisation to launch, maintain, and win in the market with what should be a truly ownable value proposition. Our Business Designers are principally responsible for assessing the viability of value propositions and design concepts, yet to do this effectively they work alongside other design disciplines and participate fully in understanding what motivates people to behave the way they do (desirability) through design research and are core to the ideation process developing design concepts, offers and even entire ventures.

What does this all lead to? It’s the difference between delivering a deck with 100s of pages of complex strategic frameworks and delivering a compelling strategy — founded on both market and real human insights —that’s brought to life through stories, experiences and/or product or service prototypes. We pride ourselves on delivering the latter, and we can’t do it effectively without strong Business Design.

We do all of this in a human-centered way, driven by empathy and deep insights into customer behaviours generated through intensive immersion with users, and the design of real-world experiments to observe behaviour and measure usage and outcomes.

Once here you will:

  • Generate new design opportunities by thinking creatively about financial impacts, risks, experiments, and data.
  • Be passionate about trying new things rather than focusing on best or known practices.
  • Collaborate with other designers to hack together new approaches that live at the intersection of multiple disciplines (such as research, industrial design and communications design).
  • Explore how approaches commonly adopted by start-ups might inform value creation for large corporations.
  • Inspire designers through business and entrepreneurial thinking, relating concepts to impact simply and through storytelling.

Relevant experience and mindset:

  • Several years of work experience, preferably in an entrepreneurial/high growth setting, with responsibilities including, but not limited to: value proposition definition, business model design, experiment structuring, live prototyping, data analysis and go-to-market planning.
  • Experience taking an idea from theory and analysis to market launch — either as an entrepreneur, member of a start-up team or as an entrepreneur (e.g. line manager, product manager, venture architect).
  • Ability to work in an ambiguous and dynamic environment and comfort collaborating with multidisciplinary design teams in a non-hierarchical organisation.
  • Ability to take individual ownership to support the collective and make others successful.
  • Ability to pull together multiple different, and sometimes conflicting, inputs (quantitative data, qualitative feedback, hypothesis, etc.) into a common point of view that can be expressed simply to people who aren’t necessarily familiar with business theory.
  • Ability to coach and teach other designers about business and to help infect the community with an entrepreneurial spirit and an excitement for the craft of Business Design and strategy.
  • A masters degree in business administration is ideal, but not essential.
  • Ability to tell compelling stories that succinctly get points across to varied audiences.
  • Comfort with clients, working as a collaborator and advisor, and the ability to confidently and credibly share your point of view and expertise.
