Business Designer (IDEO Client)

In a nutshell:

IDEO is working with one of their clients based out of Minneapolis, MN to help them hire a Business Designer. Their ideal candidate loves to craft and build new businesses and understands how (and why) designing products and services can drive strategic growth for our clients. The right candidate will have a demonstrated ability to work with a broad set of stakeholders to bring a variety of concepts and products to life and to market. We are specifically looking for people with a depth of experience in end-to-end product life cycles, business model design, market analysis, financial modeling, and implementation.

In your past life, you may have been an intra- or entrepreneur, product manager, or consultant – with experience bringing a scalable new offer to market. You fundamentally think that when you design a new product, service, or experience, you’re simultaneously designing the broader business strategy and roadmap for future growth.

Why is this role important?

As a Business Designer, you will be ensuring that the viability of new concepts are thoroughly considered. In this capacity, you'll work with the team to understand the client context, collect and interpret relevant data, develop insights, explore and define growth opportunities, define strategy, create tangible design expressions, communicate the vision, and ultimately help our clients get new offers to market.

You will take the lead in enabling your project team to forecast and simulate the impact of new offers and business models, to better understand the size of markets and opportunities, and to help inspire and validate the strategic direction of projects through data (and good old fashioned math!).

Once here you will:

  • A minimum of 8-12 years of industry experience including both contributing to and managing teams
  • Help multi-disciplinary design teams analyze a position in the market and in the organization
  • Uncover new innovation opportunities by identifying profitable markets and redesigning business models
  • Design a new venture that creates new income potential for the business
  • Design a new business model that enhances and extends consumer experiences while creating new opportunities for income
  • Design profitable new products, services, and consumer experiences that differentiate the company from its competition
  • Provide detailed points of view on the viability of new business concepts through data analysis or financial modeling
  • Help identify and develop new growth options within existing brands
  • Participate in the formulation of the organization's near term and long range goals and objectives.
  • Initiate process and profit improving financial, business and cost analysis projects based on in-depth understanding of the business and end-use customer needs.
  • Coordinate and act as a liaison between business teams and finance in developing policies and processes to ensure consistency of accounting, analysis and reporting.
  • Coordinate the flow of financial information between managers and senior management to support the forecasting and budget development processes.
  • Determine requirements for decision support and manage or perform insightful and thorough business analysis for all key issues for review by senior management.
  • Enhance and fully-leverage existing customer and product profitability models.
  • Integrate key analyses and business metrics into the business intelligence platform.
  • Create organizational structures, strategic assets, and operating models to help the company drive its own innovation.
  • Design, lead, and execute in-market experiments to gather feedback to inspire and improve new concepts.

 Relevant experience and mindset:

  • Strong understanding of financial analysis theory and techniques.
  • Curious, insightful, good listener, adaptable and results oriented.
  • Effective communicator with both financial and non-financial managers.
  • Collaboration and facilitation skills.
  • Experience working on a diverse portfolio of projects that may involve experience, interaction, digital/physical product, service, and venture design.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication in an internal and externally-facing capacity.
  • You’re a confident and flexible leader of interdisciplinary teams where harmonious collaboration is imperative.
  • You’re a systems thinker; you love solving big, hairy problems and can logically visualize complex systems and spaces.
  • You get what it takes to build something.
  • You can articulate a human-centered approach to design and be comfortable going out into the world for inspiration. You understand basic human-centered design philosophy, are comfortable with ambiguity and want to push design methodologies.
  • You can relate to individuals and nurture talent.
  • Confidence in managing strategic projects in complex, “new-to-the-world” content areas

 Question for you:

Please tell us about a time that you applied human-centered design to solve a business problem (200 words or less).
