Media Relations Lead

Chicago, IL

We are open to candidates from Eastern and Central time zones - please be advised this is a global role and will require candidates to work EST hours.

Come create impact with us

IDEO is in search of a Media Relations Lead to join our Global Brand and Marketing Group, to foster and build relationships with reporters and the IDEO community, to help shape stories that reflect our most important projects, and design earned programs (media and events) that amplify and extend the positive impact of our work.  The Media Relations Lead will own the day-to-day collaboration and liaison with IDEO’s PR agency focusing on earned opportunities (press and events) and work closely with IDEO’s Marketing Leadership team to set strategy with and for the agency.

Why is this role important for IDEO’s work?

This role makes the biggest impact by actively seeking out potential press stories within the organization that support IDEO’s corporate narrative and marketing campaigns.

The ideal candidate is very comfortable navigating ambiguity. The Media Relations Lead understands the importance of developing relationships with press, clients, and internal stakeholders to help determine IDEO's best stories and develop creative earned media outreach programs and strategies for telling them.

Once here you will

  • Actively explore new work happening across IDEO’s consulting business and unearth potential stories and story angles. This often requires connecting abstract content to IDEO’s overall narrative and strategy to shape and place stories.
  • Work directly with IDEO’s most senior leaders on earned opportunities (media and events)
  • Help steward and manage key day-to-day operations including inbound media and event inquiries, stories in development, and media analytics reports, as well as acting as key point of contact with IDEO’s PR agency
  • Cultivate and foster new and existing media relationships that allow us to tell the stories that showcase our most important work, extend the positive influence of our brand, and generate demand for our business
  • Advise and coach IDEO-ers engaged in earned media and event opportunities.
  • Support the handling of “breaking news” related to our work and collaborate with IDEO global leadership and marketing leadership in times of crisis.

For this position of Global Media Relations Lead , we provide the opportunity for this candidate to:

  • Be deeply focused on earned opportunities/channels (media and events) and content development that matters.
  • Work creatively and explore new concepts and ideas for media relations storytelling.
  • Work as part of an energetic, tightly knit, and highly collaborative global Brand and Marketing team.

Relevant experience and mindset:

In their past life, the candidate may have been in a leadership role in a PR agency, a freelance PR practitioner, or an in-house PR manager. They must know how to drive strategic earned media programs and campaigns and love to roll up their sleeves and work with a PR agency as well as directly with reporters to drive stories that create business impact.

  • Takes joy and pride in developing long-term relationships with a range of different people, from reporters to clients to the internal IDEO community. Thinks of PR as a people-centered role.
  • A self-starter who has the ability to work in a dynamic environment and is comfortable with non-hierarchical organizations.
  • Outstanding written and verbal communications skills.
  • Knows how to build and sustain momentum, keeping an eye on the big picture while also obsessing over the details.
  • A minimum of eight years of PR and media relations experience. Agency and in-house experience preferred.
  • Thrives in a fast-paced creative environment where every day is different.
  • Has an optimistic, collaborative, can-do approach. Embraces change and is excited about exploring new ground and trying new things.
  • Has experience in developing thought leadership in a B2B context. Familiarity with design and innovation services is a plus, and a curious mindset towards design is a must.
  • Has a love for finding new tools and systems that make work more efficient, particularly for better teamwork.
