Role summary:

IDEO San Francisco’s Design for Food Studio is in search of an Environments Designer with a passion for food for a three-month summer internship. What exactly is an Environments Designer? Simply put, it means you’re able to translate a design brief and insights into a physical space. That space could be a pop-up exhibit, developing restaurant’s layout, or re-imagining a retail store.

As an Environments Design Intern at IDEO you’ll work with designers of different backgrounds to create a holistic, branded experiences that integrate both physical and digital environments. You will contribute to the spatial design and planning in a project, envisioning the system in which tools, spaces, and people interact. You must love sketching, building, and working with designers from other backgrounds.

Once you are here you will:

  • Rethink spaces and experiences through the lens of a company’s brand and growth strategy
  • Translate user research and insights into tangible concepts for restaurants, retail environments, institutions, and exhibits
  • Create prototypes ranging from paper sketches to full-scale immersive exhibits
  • Work with designers from all backgrounds such as industrial design, interaction design, mechanical engineering, and MBAs

Relevant experience:

  • Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate degrees in Architecture, Interior Architecture, Exhibit Design, or Interior Design
  • Concept sketching both quick ideas as well as a more complete presentation sketches, CAD drawings in the form of plans/elevations, and 3D CAD modeling and visualization (SketchUp, Rhino or other similar programs.)
  • Outstanding communication, presentation, and collaboration skills
  • Demonstrate a human-centered approach to design solutions
  • Prior working experience in the food industry or projects related to food is desired
