Executive Design Director, IDEO San Francisco
I help to lead IDEO’s industrial design discipline, and I love making our work tangible. I partner closely with my fellow designers and our clients to bring great products, services and experiences to market.
What you won’t learn from my bio:
At 16, I read about Luigi Colani in the German TV Guide and it blew me away—I knew then being an industrial designer was the best job in the world.
As an Executive Design Director in IDEO San Francisco, Thomas Overthun looks after IDEO's work in industrial design and supports teams along the journey of designing a product from start to end. Because great products don't exist in isolation, Thomas helps to bring together all the necessary makers and experts to connect product design to brand, user experience and communication.
Shepherding new products to market has been Thomas' focus at IDEO for over 25 years. From designing a school chair that achieved market leadership to helping a British legacy brand rediscover its innovative spirit, Thomas’ expertise ranges from contract furniture and ergonomic seating, office and consumer electronics, kitchen tools and appliances, personal care items, and sports products.
Prior to IDEO, Thomas was part of the internal design team at the Dutch electronics company Philips. Thomas holds a bachelor’s degree in industrial design from the University of Wuppertal, Germany.
