Full Bio

Rachel Young is a Senior Director in the Learning Portfolio at IDEO. She is committed to a more just and equitable future for learners at every stage and age. Her specialties include researching complex human behavior and systems, employing equity-centered design research methods, translating research insights into new opportunities, and developing the space and conditions for a co-creation culture.

Rachel began her career as a sixth-grade teacher and has more than 20 years of experience in education as a designer, storyteller, product manager, graphic designer, and researcher.

While at IDEO, she led the team that designed Bendable — the lifelong learning app for public library systems. She spent a year researching the dynamics of domestic labor distribution in homes in service of making it more equitable. She led the learning design for a reading intervention app for children with Down Syndrome (in both Arabic and English). She also designed and facilitated a six-month design-thinking curriculum for the National Science Foundation's Convergence Accelerator, which included taking scientists on ghost tours of downtown San Francisco to teach them to be better storytellers.

Rachel holds her BA from Wells College. The most complex and beautiful project to which she's ever contributed is raising her daughters with her husband, and her weekends often involve large-scale coloring projects on broken-down cardboard boxes.
