Virtual Wallet, an IDEO project with PNC Financial Services Group, has been chosen as a 2010 Edison Best New Products Award finalist. The awards celebrate the persistence and excellence personified by Thomas Alva Edison and work to increase America’s drive in the realm of innovation, creativity and ingenuity throughout the global economy.

The USGBC, American Society of Interior Designers (ASID), and The Network of the Hospitality Industry (NEWH) together announced the winner of the first ever Sustainable Suite Design Competition. The competition showcased the best hospitality design strategies that boast environmental responsibility while enhancing the guest experience. Out of 65 professional design entries, IDEO and WATG took the top prize for their suite, Haptik. For more information, click here.

IDEO’s intranet, The Tube, has been honored with an Intranet Innovation Award. The IIAs are global awards that celebrate new ideas and innovative approaches to the enhancement and delivery of intranets. The goal is to find these ideas (whether large or small), and to share them with the wider community. Gold Awards are given across four different categories, each focusing on a specific aspect of intranets. Platinum Award winners are then chosen to recognize the most extraordinary entries for the year. To read more about the awards, click here.

IDEO received a top Spark Award for PNC Bank’s Virtual Wallet, two Gold awards for Bedsider for The National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy and Nurse Knowledge Exchange for Kaiser Permanente, and a Bronze award for IDEO’s Tube.

Spark is a competition created to support “multidisciplinary, multicultural, global, and aspirational design for all.” Read more about the award entries here.

GOOD magazine included “IDEO Social Impact” on its list of the GOOD 100. Others included on the list are Hillary Clinton, Electric Cars, Harlem Children’s Zone, and TEDx. Read the article here.

Architecture for Humanity recently announced the winners of the 2009 Open Architecture Challenge. This year the competition was focused on classroom design. IDEO's design for Rumi Schools of Excellence was selected to win the Urban Classroom Upgrade category. More than 1,000 design teams from 65 countries registered for the competition. The winning designs were selected from more than 400 qualified entries, each rated on feasibility, sustainability, and innovation in the learning environment.

IDEO topped the list of IDSA award winners with eight IDEA awards. Winning designs ranged from human-centered design to research to industrial design. See the gallery on the IDSA’s website here.

ID magazine awarded IDEO a design distinction in its Annual Design Review 2009 for work on the Peek. According to the magazine, “It’s a game-changer,” and praised the interface and cheap access, explaining, “It’s all part of the easy-tech revolution.” Click here for the full article.

Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management will present Tom Kelley with its annual award for distinguished leadership on May 19.

In April, David Kelley won the Edison Achievement Award for Innovation from the Thomas Edison Papers at Rutgers University. He received the award for his “pioneering contributions to the design of breakthrough products, services, and experiences for consumers, as well as his development of an innovative culture that has broad impact.” Past recipients include Ted Turner and Martha Stewart. IDEO wins Germany’s “Prize of Prizes” by capturing a gold and silver from the German Design Council.

Fujitsu Siemens Computers won the 2009 iF product design award for the ESPRIMO Mobile series professional notebooks, as well as for the ESPRIMO MA, a tablet PC design specifically for the health care sector.

IDEO's receives Red Dot Award for work with Yello Sparzähler.

IDEO was honored with three Spark! Awards: a silver award for "The Protons," and bronze awards for both "Sustainable Living Coffin" and the My Book II for Western Digital. In 2008, IDEO topped the list of IDSA award winners, with seven IDEA awards. Winning designs ranged from sports equipment to packaging to industrial design.

IDEO's Media:Scape system of tech-enabled workspace furniture won a 2008 NeoCon Gold Award.

I.D. Magazine recognized two IDEO designs in the 2008 Annual Design Review.
"Preserve," a concept by Thomas Brisebras and Jennifer Leonard, received a design distinction, while "Getting Personal with Global Warming" got an honorable mention. Both concepts were part of a series of called Designs On—.
