Global Head of Marketing & Communications (IDEO Client)

IDEO is working with one of their clients based out of Palo, CA, to help them find a Content Marketer. You are the ideal candidate if you thrive in a dynamic, creative environment and mix fun with rolling your sleeves up and getting a lot of great work done.

Who We Are

Moon Creative Lab is a design-led innovation hub in Palo Alto and Tokyo. We incubate new ventures. And uniquely, we work across sectors like healthcare and agriculture, entertainment and technology. Moon is part of Mitsui & Co.

+ We partner with Mitsui employees based all over the world to identify aspiring  entrepreneurs and incubate their ideas

+ We grow, build, and test these ideas, listening for human-centered market insights that will help us create real-world impact.

+ We design businesses that will deliver these new offers and launch them all over the world.

Who we’re looking for (you, hopefully):

We’re looking for a Global Head of Marketing & Communications to help us further define and elevate our brand globally. This role will be based in Palo Alto, CA, and will be the first marketing hire for Moon in the states. This is an opportunity to build something from scratch, and we are looking for someone who is not only strategic but also wants to be hands-on. You will have the opportunity to design and lead key functions such as internal corporate communications, web and content marketing, and our overall brand strategy.

How you’ll help Moon create impact:

At Moon, we incubate new ventures. We create conditions for Mitsui employees to learn how to launch new businesses. Inside of Moon, they have the unique opportunity to submit ideas to be incubated. In this role, you’ll set the strategy to generate internal awareness and interest in Moon. You’ll activate Mitsui’s global employee base, coming up with innovative programs and communication plans to source the best ideas and uncover the best talent. That means broadcasting to all 44,000 Mitsui employees around the world about what ideas we are incubating and what it means to be part of the Moon community. It also means sharing with the world who we are to help tell our story, and to help attract external talent to bring these ideas to life. In this role, you will help make sure that the right stories are told to the right audience.

This role will report to Moon’s CEO and partner closely with our leadership team.

What you’ll do at Moon:

  • Partner closely with leadership to develop a clear global strategy and vision for the Moon brand, driving visibility across both internal and external marketing channels.
  • Design and implementation of internal channels, tools, and platforms to keep the Mitsui community connected to Moon’s initiatives.
  • Develop marketing and communication plans that engage Mitsui employees and generate meaningful conversations around what’s happening at Moon.
  • Build partnerships with internal stakeholders at Mitsui to develop strategic communications in advance of major Moon initiatives and announcements (e.g. pitch events, design thinking workshops, roadshows, etc.).
  • Build external brand awareness and attract new creative talent to Moon by defining our approach to telling Moon’s story to, and through, the media (including handling PR requests and managing PR relationships).
  • Strengthen employee understanding of Moon’s vision, objectives, and culture.
  • Identify and nurture key relationships and partnerships (e.g. influencers in the entrepreneurial community, other innovation hubs, etc.) to expand Moon’s global network.

What you’ll encounter at Moon:

Moon is building something new. Here you’ll find a balance of diverse backgrounds, cultures, and perspectives. You’ll be challenged and learn every day.  From the beginning, you’ll help define the marketing strategy, refine it, and launch it.

The must-haves:

  • 10+ years of experience working directly with and advising senior business leaders in executing communications plans and marketing strategies that achieve business objectives
  • The ideal candidate will bring creativity, digital savvy, professional business communication, and brand storytelling capabilities, and be capable of implementing programs across multiple internal and external channels.
  • Experience in innovative modes of story-telling and developing creative programming to drive internal employee engagement, plus a demonstration of how thoughtful and creative communications strategies can impact employee behavior
  • Track record of building and fostering relationships across business functions and geographic locations; able to manage multiple stakeholders within a complex organization
  • Proven success leading and executing marketing and communications strategies in both startup and established corporate environments.
  • Ability and willingness to share marketing knowledge and expertise with current Moon entrepreneurs in residence.
  • Can thrive in a collaborative environment while having a high degree of accountability and autonomy.

The nice-to-haves:

  • Possess an entrepreneurial and founder mindset, ready to take on tasks outside of role with strong agility to change and to be flexible/resilient.
  • Experience coaching/advising startups on marketing strategy, launch plans, and tactics.
  • Experience working with cross-cultural/international organization, working directly with Japanese companies.
  • Ability to occasionally travel to Japan.
