Interaction Designer

In a nutshell:

One of IDEO’s missions is to help humanize technology. We are looking for someone who is equally passionate about designing elegant user experiences as much as using systems thinking and human-centered design as a source of inspiration to solve complex problems.

Why is this role important for IDEO’s work?

Interaction Designers make the biggest impact by thinking creatively, having a passion for pixels and prototyping. They love to make graphics move and have a knack for crafting compelling stories.

Once here you will:

  • Work on projects that solve problems across a variety of industries.
  • Collaborate with designers of different backgrounds such as industrial designers, mechanical engineers, and interaction designers to develop a holistic design for our clients.
  • Create looks like/works like prototypes that help tell a project’s story.
  • Be an advocate of exceptional design.
  • Design websites, apps, and combined digital and physical experiences with the end user in mind.

 What does IDEO offer you?

IDEO is a place unlike any other. It’s a place where you can solve complex challenges for our clients or the organization, alongside thoughtful individuals who lead with curiosity, empathy, and optimism. Sure we work hard, but we also craft moments that allow our community to pause, create, and connect. We encourage our community to bring their whole selves to work, respect the need for work-life balance, and allow for autonomy in the design process and your career.

Relevant experience and mindset:

  • Systems thinking: You love complex questions and use your work to communicate that complexity in simple ways. You are comfortable working with people who bring many different skills to the table, and can align your talents with theirs.
  • Passion for visual design: You know the difference between ‘good’ and ‘great’ and are able to work within dynamics that challenge teams, clients, and timelines to deliver excellent design. (Not only can you identify and evangelize best practices, but you’re able to push boundaries and explore new territory)
  • 3-5 years interaction/graphic design experience across a variety of digital media.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Graphic Design, New Media, HCI, Interaction Design, or an equivalent degree
  • Extensive experience with a variety of graphic design and interactive tools including Adobe Creative Suite, Sketch, Principle, Framer, etc.
  • Team skills: You work best in a participatory, team-based environment. You support and inspire teams through collaboration as well as direction, vision, and planning of all aspects of visual deliverables.
  • Communication skills: You have strong verbal and visual presentation skills, as well as an articulate point of view about design. You understand the value of design and brand within a business context.
  • Prototyping skills: You are ready to learn from failure, embrace an iterative process and you understand that success comes sooner with trial and error. You have experience in creating both low and high fidelity design deliverables for print and screen.
  • Consulting chops: Experience in concept ideation, design strategy, digital prototyping, and combining graphic design and animation. You should feel comfortable throughout all phases of a project, from translating verbal ideas into visual concepts, through design development and refinement, to creating production-ready artwork.
  • Openness: Designers need to be flexible and open-minded. You are optimistic, generative, and open to new ideas and ways of working
  • You can articulate a human-centered approach to design and be comfortable going out into the world for inspiration. You understand basic human-centered design philosophy, are comfortable with ambiguity and want to push design methodologies.

Some previous projects to check out:

  • Designing the Future of Kitchen: Help IKEA envision how people's behaviors will shape the design of the future kitchen.
  • For Kids, A Tactile Way to Learn Coding: Help create an interactive new learning experience for children to experiment with code.
  • A New Way to Vote for the People of Los Angeles: An intuitive, accessible voting experience and ballot machine for every type of voter
  • Transforming the Way You Learn about Your DNA with a Genomics Startup: Helping people harness their genetic information by launching the first store for products powered by DNA
  • Future of Automobility: An online visualization of how life with driverless cars might really look and feel. It considers four scenarios: “Moving People,” which looks at how commutes will change when we can look away from the road; “Moving Things,” where we examine automated package-delivery fleets; “Moving Spaces,” where we envision mobile offices meeting people where they live and parking in underused areas of our cities; and “Moving Together,” which explores how the interior of future vehicles will be customized to meet our personal needs during ride-sharing.

Application requirements and instructions:

Please submit a resume, cover letter (yes, we read cover letters), and a portfolio link to your portfolio or work samples of interaction design. In particular, we want to hear about the process involved in developing the design or project. Please indicate your role and contribution for each project submitted.
