Business Development Director

In a nutshell:

IDEO Cambridge is in search of a Business Development Director who will identify promising new clients and deepen relationships with existing ones.  Representing the full range of IDEO’s products and services, you will proactively design opportunities to connect our offering with client needs to drive disproportionate impact. The ideal person demonstrates a combination of business savvy, design expertise and relationship-building skills with both internal stakeholders and senior executives.

Why is this role important for IDEO’s work?

IDEO Cambridge is looking to extend our network and grow the business with new client relationships. We believe there is untapped demand for our products and services and want to hire someone to lead our proactive market development and client cultivation. To that end, we are looking for someone who has experience initiating and developing senior client relationships, a broad network of clients and collaborators, and a track record of achieving revenue goals.

Once here you will:

  • Collaborate with the Director team to help realize the studio’s vision by attracting clients and project engagements that reinforce our creative and business narrative.
  • Develop and maintain a network of senior executives.
  • Identify prospective clients (within and outside of your existing network) and work with marketing to develop a communication strategy.
  • Proactively reach out to prospective clients to understand their priorities, share IDEO’s products and services, and discuss opportunities for collaboration and impact through design.
  • Shape client engagements, managing the proposal process from developing the brief through signature and kickoff.
  • Serve as a trusted advisor to our clients and project teams by providing strategic level guidance, coaching, and critique in service of delivering world-class design and building client relationships.
  • Achieve annual revenue goals.
  • Work with the Cambridge leadership team to experiment with new ways of creating and building client relationships.

Relevant Experience:

  • 10+ years of experience in client relationship management and business development, preferably within a creative environment and/or design consultancy.
  • Experience developing and leading client relationships and building lasting partnerships.
  • Comfort with and excitement for engaging with senior executives.
  • A strong existing network of clients and partners throughout the US.
  • Demonstrated ability to meet revenue targets.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills both internally and externally including experience telling compelling stories.
  • A proactive, creative problem solver that thrives in a highly collaborative, fast-paced environment.
  • Experience and willingness to help colleagues see the potential in projects and encourage creativity.
  • Fluency in design thinking.
