Business Design Leader (IDEO Client)

In a nutshell:

IDEO is working with one of their clients based out of Minneapolis, MN to help them find a Business Design Leader. The ideal candidate loves creating new offers and businesses and leads with a mindset of discovery-driven growth.  The right candidate will have a demonstrated ability to work with a broad set of stakeholders to bring a variety of concepts and products to life and to market. We are specifically looking for people with a depth of experience in end-to-end product life cycles, business model design, market analysis, financial modeling, in-market experimentation, and implementation.

In your past life, you may have been an intra- or entrepreneur, product manager, or consultant – with experience bringing a scalable new offer to market. You fundamentally think that when you design a new product, service, or experience, you’re simultaneously designing the broader business strategy and roadmap for future growth.

Why is this role important?

As a Business Designer, you will be ensuring that the viability of new concepts are thoroughly considered. In this capacity, you'll work with the team to understand the business context, collect and interpret relevant data, develop insights, explore and define growth opportunities, define strategy, create tangible design expressions, communicate the vision, and ultimately help the business get new offers to market. As a Business Design Leader, you will define this new role at the company and shape its expansion as you build and lead a team of business designers.

You will take the lead in enabling a multi-disciplinary project team to identify and prioritize critical assumptions that underpin the success of a new offer or business model using a variety of primary and secondary methods. This could be through analyzing consumer or market data, in-context experiments using minimum viable products, evidence-based models on the size of markets and opportunities, and/or proxies to guide in the absence of available data. The intent is to inspire, build confidence, and lower risk to sharpen the strategic direction of projects through qualitative and quantitative evidence.

Once here you will:

  • Collaborate with different functional and P&L owners across the organization to leverage existing ways of working and develop new ways of working to support new lines of business as it relates to moving ideas to market and meeting innovation objectives
  • Partner with various designers to create new and evolve existing physical and/or digital products in ways that foster strategic business growth
  • Surface and frame growth opportunities and align support to prioritize and pursue them across existing lines of business and new-to-the-world aspirations
  • Design and iterate business models that enhance and extend consumer experiences and frankly assess viability and underlying assumptions through financial modeling and discovery-driven planning
  • Highlight opportunities to evolve the ways of working (i.e. organizational processes, tools) to  support new offers and drive innovation
  • Work with the team to bring new opportunities to life through storytelling
  • Translate business data and concepts into actionable insights to drive understanding and decision-making by senior leaders
  • Pioneer a new role within the organization and build a team of business designers

Relevant experience and mindset:

  • 10-15 years of industry experience including both contributing to and managing teams
  • Confidence in managing strategic projects in complex, “new-to-the-world” content areas
  • Strong understanding of financial analysis theory and techniques
  • Curious, insightful, good listener, adaptable and results-oriented
  • Effective communicator with both financial and non-financial managers
  • Collaboration and facilitation skills
  • Experience working on a diverse portfolio of projects that may involve experience, interaction, digital/physical product, service, and venture design
  • Excellent written and verbal communication in an internal and externally-facing capacity
  • You’re a confident and flexible leader of interdisciplinary teams where harmonious collaboration is imperative
  • You’re a systems thinker; you love solving big, hairy problems and can logically visualize complex systems and spaces
  • You get what it takes to build something by taking appropriate risks
  • You can articulate a human-centered approach to designing new offers and be comfortable going out into the world for inspiration
  • You understand basic human-centered design philosophy, are comfortable with ambiguity and want to push design methodologies
  • You can relate to individuals and nurture talent
