Please note the deadline to apply to this internship is May 10th, 2017

In a nutshell:

IDEO San Francisco is in search of an Industrial Design Intern who will work on concept generation, sketching, rendering, and prototyping.  The Industrial Design intern will be responsible for creating tangible design expressions, and communicating the essence of these ideas

Why is this role important for IDEO’s work?

An Industrial Design Intern will make the biggest impact by bringing new ideas, perspective, and passion to the team. Their skill set is critical to our work because they are more than an extra pair of hands.  Their original mind, paired with good tech skills and lots of energy help us push our craft forward.

Once here you will:

Be exposed to a full spectrum of design challenges, ranging from fast-paced sprint projects with start-ups, to larger longer-term engagements that interact with various parts of IDEO.

Our projects vary from soft goods, to wearables, to sporting products, to consumer electronics to name just a few of the recent ones.

What does IDEO offer you?

IDEO is a place unlike any other. It’s a place where you can solve diverse, complex challenges for our clients or the organization, alongside thoughtful, intelligent individuals who lead with curiosity, empathy, and optimism. Sure we work hard, but we also intentionally craft moments that allow our community to pause, create, and connect. We encourage our community to bring their whole selves to work, respect the need for work-life balance, and allow for autonomy in the design process and your career.

As an Industrial Design Intern in IDEO San Francisco, specifically, we provide the opportunity for you to interact with multiple studios.  The makeup of the San Francisco location is unique to IDEO.  As the largest office, we have four studios within our location -- Design for Food, Design for Change, Design for Learning, and Hatch (our think-tank / catch-all studio).  Additionally, San Francisco is home to OpenIDEO, and a number of new ventures, such as Creative Difference, IDEO U, and our Co-Lab.

Some previous projects to check out:

Relevant experience:

  • A bachelor's degree or in the process of achieving a Masters of industrial design degree.
  • Experience designing products or experiences that have both physical and digital components.
  • Experience creating packaging archetypes with a brand sensibility.
  • Experience using visuals to communicate your design intent.
  • You’re able to generate ideas quickly without a lot of background information or parameters.
  • Desire and experience in physical prototyping. Experience with digital prototyping a plus.
  • Experience using Adobe Suite, CAD, Keyshot or equivalent would be a plus.
