WINDOWS HOME COMPUTING CONCEPT FOR MICROSOFT

Integrated entertainment and home computing system

Microsoft, Hewlett-Packard, and IDEO have created a home computing concept first presented by Bill Gates at WinHEC 2004 as the vision for Microsoft’s future. This system moves from productivity and traditional computing concerns to embrace media, entertainment, and the creation of shared experiences and communications in the home.

The system is easily operated by any family member:

  • The WHC Server connects to the large-screen display in the primary living space and serves as the main home storage and communications portal. The display provides explicit and implicit information about data flow inside the home.
  • The Family Communication and Messaging Center is a wall-mounted touch-screen PC with a family dock that provides a central location for calendaring, video notes between family members, voicemail, and media capabilities. Color coding differentiates content and activities between family members.
  • The Remote is built on a mobile phone platform with a color LCD display to help the user better navigate the high volume of available media and decide where and when to view content on various displays in the home.
  • The charger uses inductive power technology to charge mobile phones, digital cameras, and other devices. Prominently placed, it serves as a physical space for downloading data from individual devices to the WHC Server.

The components feature clean designs that offer beauty and reduce the feeling of clutter in the home. They spring to action when needed or recede into the background when not in use. LEDs bring the system to life, displaying activity and content in a delightful and human way. The entire ensemble promotes natural communication and togetherness, thereby enhancing home life.
