VISOR FOR HANDSPRING

Handheld organizer

IDEO announced their close collaboration with Handspring to help deliver Visor, the first product in a new family of expandable handheld computers. IDEO’s multidisciplinary team of designers and engineers helped Handspring bring Visor from concept to finished product in less than a year.

A key factor in the rapid development of Visor was the close work-in relationship between IDEO and Handspring. IDEO provided industrial design, mechanical engineering, and electrical engineering support. Simple, elegant, and sacrificing none of the functionality that made an industry leader of the Palm, the Handspring Visor greatly broadens the possibilities of the handheld computer. “Handspring’s Visor has been a great triumph,” said Dennis Boyle, the project’s leader and a studio head in IDEO’s Palo Alto offices. “Getting this level of quality and innovation out the door in such a short time was the result of a fantastic design team and a lot of hard work. It is especially gratifying to have been able to help define the product from its earliest stages.”

Using Handspring’s innovative Springboard expansion slot, Visor accepts a wide variety of plug-in modules. This allows the handheld computer, based on 3Com’s PalmComputing platform, to interface with wireless modems, MP3 players, pagers, GPS devices, games, extra memory, and more, in addition to providing its standard calendar, contact, and notepad functions.
