VISOR EDGE FOR HANDSPRING

Thin, metal-cased PDA

Handspring’s new addition to its popular Visor line of handheld organizers is Visor Edge, an elegant metal-cased device that is the thinnest Visor handheld yet. At only 7/16 of an inch thick and weighing less than five ounces with its metal stylus, Visor Edge is even more portable and more comfortable than its siblings, but with no loss in functionality: The detachable Springboard slot allows any Springboard module to be attached easily and securely. Edge’s distinctive anodized aluminum housing is available in three colors, and it comes with a removable hinged metal cover to protect the display while stored. The die-cast zinc stylus—with a plastic writing tip—nests neatly into its slipper and clips onto the side of Edge.

IDEO provided industrial design and mechanical engineering for Visor Edge, creating a form that enhances the Visor line while defining a visual identity distinct from other handheld devices. The soft-sculpted stylus contrasts with Visor Edge’s clean, rectilinear lines. The stamped aluminum body allows this to be one of the thinnest handheld computers available, and yet stiff and robust enough to take wherever it’s needed.

Handspring’s innovative Springboard slot, which allows users to quickly add such accessories as a digital camera, a cell phone, or a GPS receiver, posed a singular engineering challenge on Visor Edge. The solution, the detachable Springboard slot, is a minimal “backpack” that mounts securely enough to leave on all the time yet detaches from Visor Edge quickly and easily when not in use.
