Swiffer Sweeper for Procter & Gamble
Resetting the design DNA of the Swiffer Sweeper
Procter & Gamble came to IDEO for help designing a next generation Swiffer Sweeper. The new tool was planned to build on the success of its popular forerunner with enhanced features and renewed appeal. To maintain its competitive pricing, the design was to maintain the basic Swiffer sweeper concept: a reusable tool with refillable cleaning pads. At the same time, the new sweeper design represented an opportunity to define the design language of future Swiffer products for a stronger brand image, and a more consistent and delightful experience.
Based on in-home observations, the multifunctional IDEO and P&G-team began designing around a number of opportunities for improvements to storage capability, handle comfort, cleaning ability, and appearance.
The final design boasts a series of clever features, including a broader head for increased cleaning surface, and a reinforced, flexible hanging ring that facilitates storage and allows for slip-free leaning. The pole of the sweeper is larger in diameter and extends inside the handle for visibly stronger construction. The handle itself is more ergonomic to fit a wide range of hands.
A fresh look at materials has given the design a layer of soft, translucent elastomeric material on the handle to provide a secure and comfortable grip for more control. A layer of flexible foam padding lining the head provides support even when the sweeper head is flipped for scrubbing action.
The overall aesthetic is one of flowing lines, with a dynamic form that alludes to the active nature of the product.
