Stackable case for recordable compact discs
TDK’s Stack is a stackable, one-sided CD case that serves as a shipping and storage container for recordable CDs. IDEO’s design team began by examining a wide range of storage solutions for the CD, starting with the ubiquitous jewel case but including paper folders, sleeves, and other ideas. This idea came from examining and expanding on the jewel-case insert, essentially making it a standalone holder and giving it a more youth-oriented personality.
Because CDs mostly need to be protected only on the back side, the designers chose to make a one-sided case, thus using less material and making it more environmentally friendly. The resulting case is stackable, so that twenty CDs in the TDK Stack case take about half the space of twenty jewel cases. This also represents a more than 50% decrease in material costs for manufacturing.
The case contains a hook to hang on a pushpin, a bar or even a clothesline, making it easy for stores to display on endcaps. The wings allow the case to be labeled and read while they are stacked, simply by rotating the case. The cases come in different vivid, translucent colors to allow another level of categorization.
The case has allowed TDK to offer a greater number of products in major retail markets, such as Wal-Mart. They’ve expanded from the original 15-CD pack to a 25-Cd pack, and a new 5-CD pack is rolling out now. In addition, TDK is beginning to offer the case without the CD-Rs, to satisfy the CD-R users who want an innovative way to store their CDs.
