SLIM NEW PACKAGING TO BOOST A FLAT MARKET FOR CLEARLAB

Contact lens storage and dispenser systems

An estimated 125 million people worldwide wear contact lenses, with approximately eighty percent of users opting for disposable soft contact lenses. These numbers have remained relatively stagnant due to a lack of product innovation focused on addressing the needs of the lens wearer.

To improve the lens wearer’s experience, Clearlab approached IDEO for technical assistance with a new, user-friendly daily disposable contact lens package. Inspired by Clearlab’s proprietary technology and ideas, IDEO began collaborating with the organization to facilitate a series of quick-turn injection molding tools that would provide immediate and meaningful feedback for the primary pack design. As a result, IDEO helped with the rapid prototyping of a flat foil pack that provides two significant benefits to the wearer: It simplifies the contact lens wearing experience and reduces the risk of discomfort and infection.

Designing for the lens wearer’s complete experience, IDEO also collaborated with Clearlab to completely redesign the contact lens secondary pack, which holds two weeks worth of lenses and easily dispenses the contact lens primary packs when a change is needed. In a final push, IDEO helped realize Clearlab’s idea for a super-portable wallet pack with a prototyped model that accommodated two pairs of lenses in the thickness of approximately one credit card.
