Update of UK's ubquitous mailbox
IDEO has been working with the British Royal Mail since 1993 to design and develop a visual language and identity for new street furniture. Royal Mail has had a strong presence on UK streets since the turn of the century, but human considerations have forced needed changes; for instance, the internal container was redesigned to alleviate back strain and the postal slot was made wheelchair-accessible.
The new visual language reflects Royal Mail’s heritage obligations, but still takes the design forward to respond to new needs. The boxes are recognizable as “Royal Mail,” yet modern, efficient, and friendly—an evolutionary product.
