ALPS requested IDEO's assistance in designing a distinctive enclosure for its four-color printer mechanism, which produces results that rival laser printing at a lower cost. In less than three months, IDEO created five different foam models from approved sketches and delivered a final model to meet ALPS' challenging deadlines.

IDEO also performed studies to help determine appropriate color schemes. In addition, a specially designed front door allows users easy access to a "microdry" color ribbon cartridge, unique to ALPS. "Our greatest design challenge was to create a fresh, appealing appearance that visually reinforced ALPS' reputation for the highest quality."
