OVATION FUEL DISPENSER FOR DRESSER WAYNE

Improved gas pump

All gas pumps may look alike, but they don’t all necessarily operate the same way. Trying to figure out how they work at a station you’re not familiar with can turn your “quick” but important errand into a frustrating and time-consuming chore. Wayne, a producer of rugged, dependable, and innovative dispenser equipment, knew they could improve on current models. With IDEO’s help, they created the Ovation gas dispenser, a fail-proof, full self-service pump that anyone can use, including people in wheelchairs.

Ovation borrows from the ubiquitous ATM machine concept to provide a layout that most users are already comfortable with. From paying to pumping, the unit focuses users’ attention and then moves them intuitively and seamlessly through the process. Components have been scaled to be smaller, less intimidating, and more ergonomic, and forms have been softened and sculpted for greater attractiveness. Women, in particular, find the Ovation gas dispenser to be much more user-friendly and safer than other models, in part because its smaller height means that strangers cannot be hiding on the other side. Moreover, Ovation is the only dispenser that meets the ADA recommendations for accessibility without requiring any modification.

With its smaller design and reduced complexity, the Ovation dispenser is far less costly to manufacture than traditional units. The footprint of the dispenser easily fits over older models and thus reduces the amount prep work a station must do to install it. The design of the cabinet door has also made servicing much easier. By offering a product with significant benefits for both end users and gas stations, Wayne has witnessed a double-digit market share increase in North America.
