The next generation of standard-setting insulin pens
People with diabetes want to worry less about their disease, and focus more on living their life. IDEO was charged with designing a new pre-filled insulin device which was discrete and easy to use to help patients do just that.
Building on the successful experiences in previous pen designs, Lilly again partnered with IDEO to design a new prefilled injection pen. IDEO and Lilly integrated IDEO’s user-centered design and engineering expertise to create a new design which minimized size and improved ease-of-use. To ensure high quality manufacturing at annual production volumes measured in millions; the team carefully analyzed the more than 100 interactions between the pen’s 13 parts so that assembled pens would reliably meet all fit, function, and performance requirements.
The resulting design, launched in the United States in 2008 as “KwikPen,” is a blue insulin injection pen which measures 5.7 inches long – only slightly longer than a Sharpie marker. The small size is important to patients because it improves discretion between doses (when carried in pocket or purse), as well as reducing the stroke length required to inject the dose. Combined with a lower pressure to inject and clearly legible dose numbers, KwikPen helped better address the needs which patients expressed to us.
Kwikpen was successfully launched by Lilly in the US market in 2008.
