Soft-drink vending machine interface
As part of IDEO’s ongoing innovation relationship with Pepsi, the design team looked for opportunities to improve the experience of using a bottled-drink vending machine. This project focused only on the vending machine door, introducing features that sets Pepsi apart from its competitors, is attractive and eye-catching, and helps drive sales. The new door had to interface seamlessly with the existing machine body.
The project began with IDEO’s human factors experts observing people interacting with a variety of vending machines, from ATMs to snack machines, in order to understand the stumbling blocks in existing systems. These observations informed the new door design in a number of relevant ways.
The selection buttons were enlarged to present actual-size images of the bottled beverages. This makes them easy to see from far away, to address the reported frustration at seeing the machine’s brand but not which products are offered. The delivery window at the bottom of the machine was enlarged and lit from within in response to users’ reluctance to place their hands into the small, dark windows in existing machines.
The electronic display in the center of the door guides the user through the stages of purchase, including insertion of money, selection of beverage, change, and delivery. An electronic lock and remote monitoring system were introduced to ease the servicing of the machine. The electronic lock is designed to curb break-ins and the resulting vandalism, a significant concern to Pepsi.
This product is a significantly different looking vending machine. The graphics of the machine are easy to recognize from a distance, indicating easily not only the Pepsi brand, but also what beverage choices are available.
