Game Suite for Cranium

Furthering a brand with iconic characters

Since the launch of its namesake game, Cranium, Inc has been bringing families together with the promise to give everyone a chance to shine. At the core of all Cranium games, books and toys is a focus on laughter, togetherness and creativity rather than competition, allowing kids and adults to shine as they create works of art and imagination, perform funny feats, and make delightful discoveries.

Based on IDEO’s success in developing game concepts, and eager to further an existing partnership, Cranium and IDEO teamed up to collaborate on a suite of games around their four iconic characters: Word Worm, Creative Cat, Data Head, and Star Performer. To get inspired, a team of IDEO and Cranium designers began by observing people who exemplified the Cranium characters. After brainstorming and prototyping hundreds of ideas, the team created fully working prototypes that evolved into a series of game-playing sessions with families. The observations and insights generated by these sessions helped develop the final game-play and instructions for four games:

o Tune Twister, based on Cranium’s Star Performer character, challenges players to collaborate by composing and singing songs.
o Super Showdown, based on the Data Head character, dares players to create unlikely challenges for equally unlikely candidates.
o Doodle Tales, based on Creative Cat, challenges players to draw missing parts of funny photos and create captions for each other’s creations.
o In Word Worm’s Wacky Words, players write clever phrases to complete a number of word-based, mad lib-style compositions.

Doodle Tales received a 2007 Oppenheimer Toy Portfolio Platinum Award.
