Articulating innovation
With the transition in the computer peripheral industry from CRT screens to LCD displays, Details approached IDEO to design and engineer an LCD support with world-class adjustability and low manufacturing cost. The resulting FYI monitor arm supports solitary and group work with 180˚ rotation at the base, 360˚ rotation around the lower arm, 160˚ of pan adjustability, 20˚ of backward tilt, and 30˚ of forward tilt. Drawing inspiration from task lighting, the design features four-bar linkage, which is positioned behind the monitor to reduce visual clutter. A built-in counterbalance tool enables the user to make adjustments without having to rely on a facilities person, unlock mechanisms, or reach behind the monitor.
The news is good: It won Neocon Gold upon introduction in 2005, sales are up 80% over the prior year it was introduced, and that success has made it possible to create new offerings for dual monitors and color choices.
