FLORIDA COASTAL SCHOOL OF LAW FOR INFILAW

Designing for a new model of legal education

“How can we create a distinctive law school experience for a new generation of legal minds?” This was the question posed to IDEO by The InfiLaw System (InfiLaw), a consortium of independent law schools, in anticipation of planning a new campus for the Florida Coastal School of Law in Jacksonville.

Disillusioned with the school’s existing building and the lack of campus feel, InfiLaw was seeking an environment that would promote a sense of inclusion and student-centeredness, and help advance opportunities for students to become practice-ready.

IDEO recognized their client’s need to create a new model of legal education that blended the rigors of traditional law school with a supportive learning environment, one in which faculty are accessible and student success is paramount. IDEO began exploring ways to provide InfiLaw with a template for an improved educational experience as well as a stronger brand identity tied to its mission.

In speaking to faculty and students, IDEO learned that the professors required more teaching space to move throughout the room, assisting students with questions and mediating conversations. From the students IDEO gathered that peer-to-peer learning was essential, and that more venues for private and public interaction were needed. Equipped with this firsthand perspective, IDEO focused on four key touch points: the “unclassroom,” the front door, student-facing offices, and collaborative spaces.

In envisioning these four spaces IDEO fulfilled a range of stakeholder needs, from giving professors alternative areas to meet with students to designating spaces that promote collaboration and mentoring. The final template offered a clear and inspirational depiction of a new education paradigm, with services, tools, and spaces designed to create an open and nurturing environment for a range of instruction methods and learning modes.
