Differentiating mobile phones through fashion
“Intelligent wearability” is the ethos behind three new phones designed by international design company IDEO in collaboration with Xelibri(TM), the fashion phone brand of Siemens. The phones are designed to enhance the Xelibri reputation for offering top fashion accessories and each phone targets a different market.
The IDEO designs incorporate patented concepts that allow the phones to be attached to the user’s body or clothing which helps to take the mobile phone as a fashion accessory to a new level.
Xelibri 5 attaches to a strap with a simple belt clip of the kind found on bags and backpacks. Xelibri 7 has a built-in clip section that can be slipped over the edge of clothing and bag straps or clipped inside a bag for easy access. Both these phones use a standard keypad with familiar button layouts so that dialing and SMS composition is simple.
The jewelry-like ring of Xelibri 8 sits around a narrow section of the phone, allowing it to be worn on a chain as a necklace. A simple twist allows the phone to be removed from the ring for use. Xelibri 8 is operated via the navigation key and a voice control system.
Commenting on the design solutions, Leif Huff of IDEO says, “Three factors come together to define the soul of each product: behavior, language and technology. The way people behave in their daily lives and in relation to fashion informed the design, the product language was developed to support the Xelibri brand and tie the phone collection together, and standard technology was incorporated in a particularly user-friendly way.”
