A low-tech method of placing labels on CDs
Consumers increasingly create custom labels for their own compact discs at home, and studies show this practice growing in coming years as more people buy CD and DVD writers. But the action of placing a label on a compact disc is surprisingly complex, and labels often get misaligned or adhere unevenly, leaving bubbles or creases. Avery, the market leader in labels, wanted to offer a smooth and effective method to apply labels correctly.
IDEO’s solution to these problems is the AfterBurner System, combining a flexible curved applicator to place the label onto the disc and new labels with tear-away tabs, ensuring a perfect label application every time.
Two sources of frustration—the tendency for sticky labels to attach to fingers and stray papers, and misaligned and badly adhered labels—are addressed by the AfterBurner System. The labels now have detachable nonadhesive tabs that match tabs on the foam pad of the applicator, making it simple to remove the label from its backing sheet and align it correctly. And the curved applicator places the label evenly on the disc, smoothing it from the center outward.
To apply a label, the user removes a label from its backing sheet and places it sticky-side-up on the applicator’s foam pad, then presses a compact disc down against the label. The curved spring steel-and-plastic applicator flexes downward as the user applies pressure, compressing the foam pad and pressing the label from the center outward to remove bubbles. The result is a flat and centered label that looks professionally applied.
