R&D: What We're Thinking About

  • In-store support. Depending on one’s state of mind, shopping can be quick and prudent or utterly indulgent. Designing retail environments to guide and support healthy lifestyles is becoming a responsibility of brands that wish to build lasting consumer relationships.

    Movement en masse. Wellness initiatives at scale require dynamic and memorable touch points to attract and reinforce membership. Whether physical or virtual, these anchors can be informational, social, personal, and collective in order to reach consumers on emotional and behavioral levels and create a sense of community.

  • Integrated initiatives. Instead of making wellness a silo separate from other brand and organizational initiatives, healthy options can be integrated at all points of engagement. Especially important in workspaces, a seamless platform prevents individuals from having to self-select into healthy living and risk falling back on old habits.

Healthy Spaces

Modern-day gyms have become the authority for nutritional information. The drugstore pharmacy is an immediate resource for health care consultation. Spas provide restorative therapies for mind and body. These examples indicate a phase shift in service models. IDEO Healthy Spaces seek to optimize this evolution and integration of wellness by creating spaces to promote health-centric experiences, moments, and practices.

We think about how to embed and operationalize wellness within new spaces, and how to make everyday spatial experiences additive and holistic. We strive to make users’ health paramount, creating hospitals that cater to patients and care givers, retail spaces that are informative and inspirational, and communities that embody healthy living.
