R&D: What We're Thinking About

  • Design over time. Taking the long view is our approach to solving the toughest problems. This systemic approach to design helps people and communities meet long-term goals as their needs and circumstances evolve.

    The toolbox. Our proprietary adherence loop outlines a user journey designed to move people from preparation to initiation to maintenance. Integral to this process are design principles that guide all stakeholders—from clients to patients to family members—toward meaningful choices and manageable solutions.

  • Broad application. Adherence solutions extend beyond health care to address issues of loyalty, persistence, retention, and behavior change in a wide range of industries. Emerging areas for application include sports fandom, organizational transformation, contests and competitions, and membership.

    Design for sustained change. This approach takes the basic adherence toolkit and customizes it for work in the world of sustainability.

Adherence

Adherence can be defined as taking prescribed actions over time to gain the maximum benefit. A complex issue with significant human and business impact, achieving adherence goals continues to stymie many industries, despite much research. By considering adherence as a design opportunity, IDEO creates tools to guide both research and practice.

We understand program profiles to design for optimal adherence. We leverage support networks to create solutions that work in everyday life and support existing behaviors. Outcomes include systemic solutions that, for healthcare, can increase doctors and patients’ confidence in therapies, improve revenues, lower healthcare costs, and deliver better outcomes for patients.

Beyond healthcare, we’re applying these methods to address issues of loyalty, persistence, retention, and behavior change in a wide range of industries, including consumer goods and services, retail and hospitality, finance, and sports fandom.
